The mighty rainbow!
Beloved by children around the world. The trade sign for painters, for obvious reasons. The ever elusive source of the mythical leprechaun's gold! And also a sign signifying universal love and acceptance. But long before any of these connections, the rainbow had another meaning, and it still has this meaning today. It was given as a sign from God after He destroyed every person in the world but eight, because of their great wickedness. The promise was that He would never again destroy the whole world in a flood.
We can only imagine how great their evil must have been for God to flood the whole earth. And yet, we see by looking at the evil still in the world, and even the evil we sometimes see inside our own hearts, that this global baptism did not take away the sin of the world. But it testified of this great need - the need to wash away the evil from all of us. Both the cataclysm of the flood and the promise given with the rainbow sign anticipated a day when the evil in the world would truly be broken. The flood declares the holiness and justice of God; that He will not allow evil to go unpunished. But the rainbow proclaims His mercy; the earth will not - cannot - bear the cost.
Therefore, when God became the man Jesus to come into the world to bear that cost on our behalf, He gave us the sign of Noah's flood - to die with Christ in the water of baptism and to be raised to new life, as Jesus was raised to life and walked out of the tomb, having defeated death on our behalf.
This month, the rainbow is said to celebrate love and tolerance of all manner of ideas about sexual choices and gender identities, and it does this in the name of pride. The idea of universal love is a wonderful Christian idea, as Jesus told us to love even our enemies. But love does not celebrate the destructive pride that makes a person say, "I know better than God". He made us male and female. The males He made male and the females He made female. He made the males to love the females and the females to love the males, and by this love every generation has come to be.
Since allegiance is demanded during the month of June, many companies and politicians are eager to prove their goodness by saying the words demanded of them or posting a rainbow on their door or social media. But telling lies to hurting people to be liked is not love. Love is a business providing an excellent service every day, no matter what life choices a customer makes. Love is helping your neighbor when they are in need. Love is God dying on a cross for the sins of the world instead of destroying us all. And love is God taking broken men, women, and children out of the grave and giving us new life.
This June we celebrate each day; this is the day the Lord has made. He made us to love Him and to love each other, but not to live by lies.
