Lots blooming this week! Perennials are exploding and things are smelling good! Apples, Amur cherry, chokecherry, and Saskatoons are smothered with blossoms so the bees are happy.

It’s hot and windy, which is interfering with planting. But there are still some beautiful things to enjoy!

There is still a bit of snow here - and we are definitely in slo-mo with all this cool weather. But some of the spring beauties are persisting and showing up anyway!

It’s gladiola time!

It’s later than usual but you have to go by your conditions, not your calendar.

I’ve brought my glad corms out of storage, peeled them, and set them in trays of water to pre-sprout. They will grow fresh roots, then send up shoots, and be ready to plant out in a few weeks, weather permitting.

We’re either snow covered or under water here in the gardens so far. Not a very auspicious beginning to May. But gardeners are hopelessly optimistic. Good things are on their way!

We climbed a snow mountain this afternoon. You know, just for fun. 😂 But inside, the acidanthera bulbs went into soil. They don’t look like much yet - in the gladiolus family, they are dried up looking corms that I planted deeply into a large pot. As they grow, I will add more soil until they are buried quite deeply which will help to anchor them. The bulbs are double the size they were when I bought them last year, so I’m hoping for a great show!

Gardening - the big exercise in FAITH. Dahlias are waking up! Yes, the snow behind my garden room is waaaay over the tops of my garden arches. But inside, the sunshine is creating the miracle of regeneration. This is the paradox. We know spring is coming, even though our senses scream that it isn’t. Hold on, garden friends. It’s coming.

I’m guessing that drift out there is pushing 7 feet deep. But inside my garden room it’s almost 30 C in the sunshine! So I’m taking cuttings from these beautiful geraniums today - apple blossom from my gardening friend Doreen and a tulip blossom I’ve had for years and just keep propagating. Beats sulking in the house when I wanna be outside. 😂
