Laminate or vinyl? Vinyl flooring tends to be tougher than its laminate counterpart. In a basement, I would always recommend vinyl in a basement or anywhere it could get wet (kitchen or bathroom). Laminate has "waterproof" options but those are typically surface waterproof. This means water can sit on the surface for a specified amount of time (e.g., 24 hours). The core of laminate is typically some type of pressed wood that will swell if it gets wet and will not return to its original shape when dry. Laminate does typically have a lower price point and can be great in bedrooms when on a limited budget.

Rigid foam for basement wall insulation is a great way to keep framing from touching concrete (concrete and wood are both porous). Combined with a subfloor system, it creates space for air to flow, preventing moisture build up which will lead to mould. A 2" foam (R10) and R12 batt insulation exceeds the building code requirement of R20 in the basement and is cost effective.

Build with cedar. Though western red cedar comes with a hefty price tag, it is hard to argue with the result. A natural, organic look that is resistant to rot and bugs and it smells amazing. It can be used for a variety of indoor and outdoor projects.
