Our 5th year anniversary!

The Great Canadian Flag Project, Windsor, Designed 2013, Built 2017

While a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor, Joseph Passa, part a committee to evolve a Rotary Civic Project, suggested to have a large Canadian Flag installed at the end of Ouellette Avenue on the Riverfront. Back in 1994 he had a group of visitors from New Zealand descending the overpass coming into the downtown who thought that Detroit was part of Windsor which was clearly in view. He mentioned at that time that we needed a large flag to say this is where Canada stops and that is the United States beyond. While a member of the City Centre Revitalization Task Force from 1996 to 1999 Joseph Passa held a city wide competition called “Where Main Street Meets the Waters Edge” where he suggested the large Canadian Flag as a starting point. Numerous students from the local college as well as many community members suggested various options for the location ranging from electronic displays, lights and physical structures. In 2013 Passa Architects worked with the Rotary committee providing photomontages of the flag from the main street, Ouellette Avenue, and eventually the Great Canadian Flag was installed to the delight of the community in 2017.

It’s official, The Goyeau Green Twin Tower Apartment Project, which we just submitted for Pre-Submission to the City is the first of hopefully many ‘vertical forests’ for Windsor.

The Goyeau Green Twin Towers are designed to create an urban vertical forest where people and nature will coexist within two 21 storey landmark residential towers in the city of Windsor, It is a project for metropolitan reforestation with vertical planting which will absorb carbon, reduce pollution, buffer noise, and provide cooling while enhancing the natural environment with biodiversity.
The towers will house 544 apartments with a landscaped podium for 548 cars and be covered with thousands of shrubs and plants. Each Tower will have 54 large 3 level trees with smaller vegetation on private balconies which will improve air quality efficiently by absorbing carbon dioxide. The plantings will also play a key role in moderating indoor temperatures in the summer by shading the interiors while hosting multiple-species of trees and shrubs to promote biodiversity providing an oasis for nesting birds. The vegetation also supports the occupants by producing oxygen and humidity while establishing connections with nature through sensory perception with the natural elements of water, air, light, and greenery. This helps in creating a more productive and healthier environment with positive effects for the psychological and physiological health of all residents.
The buildings will be self-sufficient using renewable energy from solar panels located on the south-west side of both of the towers. Filtered wastewater will also be utilized to sustain the buildings’ plant life. Thus, the green technology systems will reduce the overall waste and carbon footprint of the towers with the cooling benefit of the facades contributing to reduced temperatures in the vicinity of the building in the urban core of Windsor.
