✨An exciting design project ✨

The ask: a complete landscape overhaul using as many native plants as possible for two side-by-side cottages.

The answer: heck yeah 🤘

Each garden flows into the next. Follow the coloured arrows through the slides to see where each one leads. The plants at the bottom of each slide are a small selection of the natives used in each garden

I was able to include a huge diversity of native plants as per client request (maybe I’ll post a deep dive into each garden here soon?).

This project is a design/install collaboration between myself and Karla Florascape. It will be completed in stages starting this fall! I am so excited to see these gardens taking shape!!

My first voiceover 🫣 Cleaning up my garden after vacation! It’s crazy how much can change in a short period of time. This spot makes me so happy because it feels so alive. Constantly buzzing with pollinators, dragonflies, caterpillars, and as I write this goldfinches are feasting on sunflower seeds. Gardening is a gift that keeps on giving!!

I can’t believe how quickly summer is moving! Here are some moments from my garden. The creekside native garden I installed in early spring has taken off (funny how well plants grow when they’ve evolved in an area for thousands of years?). The Butterfly Milkweed is on its second flush of flowers and supporting Monarch caterpillars. The Pearly Everlasting is in full bloom and supporting a second wave of American Lady caterpillars! Coneflower and Liatris were July additions, and are settling in nicely. Recently I cut back my Wild Bergamot and Scarlet Bee Balm. Older stems had too much powdery mildew, but new growth shooting up from the base is clean and could bloom again by the end of the season. Planted alongside these native species are sunflowers that have grown absolutely massive. It’s crazy that I started them from tiny seeds and they are now over 10 feet tall! It has made me so incredibly happy this summer to care for nature by caring for my garden. You’ve gotta try it!! 🌻

Gardening to me is about more than the plants themselves. It’s about the connection to the natural world. Tending to plants that have been here much longer than I, and watching their long evolved relationships with other beings, I feel like I am a part of their ecosystem. Making positive impacts instead of negative ones.

I think if everyone took the time to notice a little relationship in nature, happening right under our noses, we might be more inclined and conscious of making positive choices impacting the wild lives around us.

This monarch began as an egg laid by her mother on milkweed I planted especially for her.
She will go on to find a mate, and I’d like to think she would find her way back to my tiny patch of curated wilderness to birth the next generation.

Have you heard of Whorled Milkweed? Named for the whorls of leaves growing in a ring around the stems. These are native to Southern Ontario tall grass prairie habitat, however since the habitat itself is rare, so too is the whorled milkweed. I purchased this plant in the spring and so far it has been very easy to care for. It doesn’t require lots of water or rich soil. It actually prefers dry, poor soil! I hope that this plant will produce seeds this season that I can share with fellow enthusiasts!

An exciting surprise this morning! Black swallowtail caterpillars on my dill. I planted it specifically for them. I’m so happy they are here! Dill and parsley are in the same family as one of their native host plants, Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea). Black swallowtails are able to use both dill and parsley to complete their life cycle!
