Friends of Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens

Friends of Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens honours the memory of Windsor, Ontario's 28th mayor, (1975-1982) Albert Howard Weeks.

This beautiful park has an incredible four-part water feature as its main focus: font, waterfall, reflecting pond and stream. Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens honours the memory of Windsor, Ontario 28th mayor, Albert Howard Weeks, b. 1917 d. 1990. Bert was mayor from 1975 to 1982 and served as city councillor almost continuously from the 1950s until he was elected mayor. He was a tireless advocate for

his adopted city (moved from Montreal in 1948 with his wife and twin daughters) and also a friend of those in need. During his tenure as mayor, he opened the city's arms to the Vietnamese Boat People when no other city in Canada would have them. He recognized the need for diversity in the city in culture as well as in industry and was instrumental in saving a Ford plant from moving to Ohio. He also helped bring several new industries into the area, including Colio Wines. A proponent of green space and public parks, he lobbied hard for 9 area parks including Gnatchio Trail, Malden, Ojibway Park Complex and Prairie Grass Reserve, etc. He was also instrumental in saving Willistead Manor when it was threatened with demolition in the 1970s. Bert had 6 children, 2 step children and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We would like to thank the city of Windsor, and especially Jan Wilson, Mike Clement and Wanda Letourneau for the fine job they did in sprucing up and then maintaining Bert Weeks Memorial Gardens, this past summer. The park was clean, no vandals in sight and the flowers were blooming like crazy.

Unfortunately my father, Windsor's 28th mayor who passed away in 1990, is not able to enjoy his namesake, but wherever he is, I'm sure he is proud of his park and the waterfront for which he so tirelessly, advocated.

Thanks again to the city and all of it's workers for their great job of doing him proud.

The Weeks family.

Just sent this note to Jan Wilson. Hello Jan. Can you please tell me what the plan is for my fathers park re: flowers, planters and the like. It is looking very barren at the moment. Also, you may or may not know, there is, an in ground sprinkler system which if operational and used regularly, would go a long way towards keeping my Dad's legacy green and healthy. My family appreciates in advance your kind attention to these matters. Sincerely, Howard Weeks.

Sorry I haven't posted in here for a while. The good news is, the perennial gardens were restored including the water plants, pots of annuals were added during the fair weather months, and the gardens received maintenance, including weeding. Here is an update about plans for the possibility of a horticulturist to be hired by the city that would be primarily dedicated to this park.

The 2017 proposed City Of Windsor budget includes a dedicated employee to focus on the maintenance associated with the Bert Weeks Memorial Garden on the city's riverfront. The Bert Weeks Memorial Ga...

Sent this letter today to Phil Roberts. Hi Phil.
Nice to see some colour in the park thanks to the per-annuals. Also thanks for having those crazy water plants put back in. Still hoping for more colour with some nice annuals and the planters put back.. Is it just my imagination or do I remember an in ground sprinkler system that would keep the place from looking so dry. As a mater of fact, those new trees that were planted last year are looking half dead from lack of water. Do you think installing those tree-gators that I've seen around, would help. Pity to just let them die.

Last year you proved how great my dad's park can look. I'm hoping it wasn't just a one shot deal.

Regards, Howard
