Have you noticed small cracks in your drywall that weren't there just a few weeks ago? Drywall cracks in the winter for a number of reasons, including:
➡️ Temperature changes: Drywall expands when it's warm and contracts when it's cold. This natural process can cause drywall to crack, especially in areas with large seasonal temperature differences.
➡️ Humidity changes: Low humidity levels can cause the materials in your home to shrink, which can lead to cracks.
➡️ Truss uplift: Temperature and humidity changes can cause trusses to bow upward, which can crack the drywall where the wall meets the ceiling.
➡️ Foundation settling: As homes age, the ground beneath them can shift, which can cause stress on the home and lead to cracks.
➡️ Faulty taping: If the drywall was installed poorly, it may be more likely to crack.
➡️ Snow or ice on the roof: The weight of snow or ice on the roof can cause the drywall to sag and crack.
To avoid drywall cracks, you can try turning the heat down in your home and use a humidifier to increase the moisture in the air. Need a hand fixing those cracks? Give us a call!
