Architecture for the next 500 years. TEN decided to design with some new criterion.
Developed for the EBG with Dr. Neven Kostic, our three-floor hybrid construction prototype leverages the comparative advantages of both a concrete and prefabricated timber element system. This hybrid approach compliments the best properties of each structure, reduces material and construction time, and offers unique spatial possibilities over the lifespan of the building.
The precast concrete columns and circulation core support in-situ concrete slabs at every third floor forming a robust 500-year super-structure. The efficiency of concrete to manage primary loads avoids the need for large timber profiles and excessive lamination adhesives. The timber element system is concentrated between the concrete slabs in the form of adaptable three-storey structures. This allows the tower to be locally adapted to meet changing standards, user concessions or pressure for capital optimization without the need to demolish the concrete structure. We are currently working closely with Olivier Campagne and ArtefactoryLab to realise this.
