Rem Koolhaas notoriously asserted in the Harvard Guide to Shopping that shopping has become the last remaining form of public activity. It remains a topic of debate if the assertion should be understood as a descriptive statement, or rather a manifesto. That kind of ambivalence suits Koolhaas, who understands the Faustian pact at the heart of the study of retail: that in order to be able to perform a critique of retail, you need also to be able to understand its fascination. Only those who are complicit may also sit in judgment, and perhaps the inverse is true: those who make the most astute judgments are also best able to become agents within the system. It is perhaps not coincidental that the Harvard Guide to Shopping came out at the same time as Robert Somol and Sarah Whiting’s controversial essay “Notes around the Doppler Effect and Other Moods of Modernism” (2002), which argued against the idea that architectural autonomy could offer a platform from which independent critique was possible.

"I wrote that the mannequin by Duchamp is by far the most interesting, as it’s the only one that looks like she could have decided to wear what she wears herself. There’s a legacy in the 20th century, which I consider more interesting, of art works that engage with mannequins without destroying them. For example Fred Wilson’s amazing piece Guarded View, it’s so simple because they are just doing the job which they were meant to have—which is so different from those tortured surrealist mannequins." –Lucy McKenzie

"As we discussed, the work of window trimmers is completely overlooked. You can’t study it anymore, and when you do study it it’s more about visual merchandizing. I suppose it’s because it’s commerce and these props would be made and discarded, but not kept because they weren’t seen as art objects. We have to try to put the fragments together ourselves. We have possibly every book on different window trimmers and window display possible but I am sure that there is so much that is left out and that is quite frustrating." –Beca Lipscombe .b

In a series of talks we raise speculative questions about the relationship of shopping and architecture: How can you introduce criticality into the commercial realm of architecture? What are the urban implications of to the so called retail apocalypse? How can we read the historic Avantgarde’s obsession with consumer culture? These discussions with various artists and architects, including Atelier E.B, Claire Fontaine, Anne Holtrop, Dominique Gonzales Foerster, GR10K, Rem Koolhaas, Mark Lee, Smiljan Radic, James Wines, and more, evolve into a forthcoming publication on the subject. In 2021, new iterations of the corresponding exhibition initially held at gta exhibitions, ETH Zurich take place at Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, MA and The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal.
