Ciénaga de Mallorquín

🏆 AIA Sustainable Future Award for Urban Design

Su aproximación a la sostenibilidad parte del paisaje y prioriza la restauración ecológica, la gestión sensible del agua y el bienestar comunitario. Los senderos elevados permiten mantener los flujos hidrológicos y proteger el hábitat, mientras la vegetación nativa se conserva para reducir el uso de recursos y fortalecer la biodiversidad. Los humedales restaurados gestionan el agua lluvia mediante infiltración natural, convirtiéndose en un sistema de filtración activo. De esta manera, el parque no solo promueve la educación y la recreación pasiva, sino que propone un modelo replicable de diseño ecológico comunitario de bajo impacto.

The approach to sustainability begins with the landscape and prioritizes ecological restoration, sensitive water management, and community well-being. Elevated walkways allow natural hydrological flows to continue and protect the habitat, while native vegetation is preserved to reduce resource use and strengthen biodiversity. Restored wetlands manage rainwater through natural infiltration, becoming an active filtration system. In this way, the park not only promotes education and passive recreation, but also proposes a replicable model of low-impact, community-centered ecological design.

El proyecto está profundamente ligado a la identidad de Barranquilla. Ubicada en el encuentro entre el mar Caribe y el río Magdalena, la Ciénaga de Mallorquín es el espacio con mayor biodiversidad de la ciudad, albergando más de 200 especies de aves al año. El Ecoparque introduce un espacio de transición donde actividades cívicas, como la pesca artesanal y la educación ambiental, coexisten con los procesos naturales.

The project is deeply tied to Barranquilla’s identity. Located at the meeting point between the Caribbean Sea and the Magdalena River, the Ciénaga de Mallorquín is the city’s most biodiverse area, home to more than 200 bird species each year. The Ecopark introduces a transitional space where civic activities such as artisanal fishing and environmental education coexist with the area’s natural processes.

El Ecoparque Ciénaga de Mallorquín es un sistema de senderos que funciona como un límite vivo entre Barranquilla y uno de sus ecosistemas más importantes. Inspirado en los sistemas de raíces de los manglares, su diseño orgánico y ramificado guía a las personas hacia una experiencia inmersiva y respetuosa con la naturaleza, evitando el crecimiento urbano invasivo y protegiendo la dinámica ambiental de la ciénaga. Más que simples conexiones, estos recorridos actúan como estructuras activas para la conservación y la regulación del uso humano.

The Ciénaga de Mallorquín Ecopark is a trail system that functions as a living boundary between Barranquilla and one of its most important ecosystems. Inspired by the root networks of mangroves, its organic, branching design guides visitors into an immersive and respectful experience with nature, preventing invasive urban expansion and protecting the environmental dynamics of the wetland. More than simple pathways, these routes act as active structures for conservation and for regulating human use.

Centro Comunitario Rural Bolombolo

El Centro Comunitario Rural Bolombolo es un prototipo adaptable que busca crear espacios complementarios al descanso, incorporando programas culturales que suelen estar normalmente confinados a áreas urbanas: comercio, auditorios, espacios de descanso, espacios de trabajo colaborativo, talleres, espacios de exhibición, mercados. 

Hace parte de un modelo de acción territorial en el que el trazado de la infraestructura vial no solo conecte, pero a su vez retribuya a quienes habitan los territorios que se recorren.

The Bolombolo Rural Community Center is an adaptable prototype designed to create complementary spaces for rest, while incorporating cultural programs that are typically confined to urban areas: commerce, auditoriums, rest areas, co-working spaces, workshops, exhibition spaces, and markets.

It forms part of a territorial action model in which road infrastructure not only connects but also gives back to the communities living along the routes it crosses.

Se busca retribuir a las comunidades que viven en las zonas rurales por las que recorren las redes de transporte, por medio de beneficios sociales, educativos, económicos y culturales. Es una oportunidad para generar nuevos espacios culturales para las comunidades que habitan las áreas rurales.

Centro Comunitario Rural Bolombolo

Ubicado en Bolombolo, este proyecto forma parte de una serie de intervenciones que se desarrollan a lo largo de carreteras del país, dentro del marco territorial “Red de Corredores Productivos y Sostenibles”. La iniciativa busca transformar los actuales centros de control en espacios comunitarios rurales, generando un impacto positivo en los territorios atravesados por la infraestructura vial.

Located in Bolombolo, this project is part of a series of interventions along the country’s road network under the “Network of Productive and Sustainable Corridors.” The initiative seeks to transform existing control centers into rural community spaces, creating a positive impact on the territories connected by infrastructure.
