The focus of Kéré Architecture is innovation through the use of local and sustainable building materials and methods with community participation in planning and construction. The office was founded in 2005 by Burkina Faso-born architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, who won international acclaim for the design and construction of the Primary School In Gando, Burkina Faso. Working across continents from A

frica to Europe, we strive to engage localities in our design and construction approach. For our successful integration of local building material, local knowledge, and local technologies, our work continues to be recognized internationally with awards and publications. Through sustainable and affordable building practices, Kéré Architecture strives to support the educational, cultural, and sustainable needs of communities in Burkina Faso and around the world.

Carnival is almost here, and Rio is getting ready to move!

Step inside the Biblioteca dos Saberes, just next to Oscar Niemeyer’s Sambódromo. At the heart of the library, a “tree of knowledge” rises, anchoring a lively house of samba. Reading rooms, an auditorium, terraces, gardens, and open-air spaces come together to unite literature, music, and community—blurring the line between celebration and learning.

Counteract . Venice . 2023

Staying true to Kéré’s participatory way of working, the details of the installation were worked out with , a Yorck based manufacturing and engineering company. Stage One has been a trusted Kéré partner since our collaboration for the Serpentine Pavilion. Stage One’s team familiarised itself with working with clay for the first time and in a close creative exchange ensured that our vision was turned into a viable installation format.

Counteract • Venice • 2023

“An architecture that is inspired by what was, wary of what is, and hopeful of what can be, has the ability to move from a misguided status quo to audacious possibilities”

Counteract celebrates West African architectural prowess of the past, takes stock of the situation today and nudges towards a different approach. This installation offers a different vision of how to do architecture, which is made possible thanks to the essential understanding of what was and what is. Why do we build how we build? What has changed and why? What remains the same? Use of light, motivations to build, material innovation, everyday objects, and amenities as well as people’s needs in a given location can offer alternative approaches to today’s architecture that are not simply copy and paste, but their very own option.

The 2023 Venice Biennale opens May 20th until November 20th, 2023.

Counteract • Venice • 2023

Francis Kéré was invited to the 18th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia curated by Lesley Lokko.

, the first African curator of the Architettura 2023, invites Kéré Architecture to participate in the main exhibition “Laboratory of the Future”. Our installation helps set the tone that guides visitors through an unprecedented showcasing of architectural solutions outside the status quo, with most participants based in, from or connected to the African continent.

“Counteract” seeks to give context to the history and potential future of the architecture from and for West Africa. Our installation guides visitors through what this may mean for architecture by exploring three aspects: WHAT WAS, WHAT IS and WHAT CAN BE.

“Just because our history was interrupted by others, does not mean our future has to be” – Francis Kéré.

We worked with , our trusted partners since 2017. They brought their technical expertise to this project and allowed it to come to life exactly as we imagined it.

In March, we were present at the "Semaine de l'architecte" (the architect's week) in Ouagadougou. This year's theme was 30 years of construction in Burkina Faso and we were able to explore the challenges and future perspectives that take into account climate change and other pressing matters that architecture is called upon to offer solutions for.

Happy International Women’s Rights Day!

March 8th is a public holiday in Burkina Faso since 1984 when it was instituted by Thomas Sankara to highlight the day-to-day obstacles Burkinabé women face.

A mere 35 years later Berlin - our second home - followed suite and in 2019 became the first (and as of yet only) state in Germany to
make women’s day an official holiday.
