Walking Tour: Energy, Flows, Power, and Politics Along the Berlin-Spandauer Shipping Canal

Part of the mowe festival for art and urban culture.

10. May 2026
15:30h-17:00h

Meeting Point: S-Westhafen
Platform on the open-air side furthest from U9 connection

From the vantage point of our meeting spot Westhafen port opens up beneath us. Railway lines and containers intersect to form an urban industrial landscape viewed from the Putlitz bridge. From here we will explore the Berlin-Spandauer shipping canal that runs parallel to many of the railway lines emerging from the port. Over the course of 90 minutes the past and present of infrastructural sites like the Moabit Coal Power-plant will be discussed to foreground possible future scenarios based on the influx of development and gentrification. The shipping canal will lead us through the military cemetery that was once adjacent to the Berlin Wall, past the accelerated urban housing project Europa City to the Bundesnachrichtendienst (German secret service). Our tour offers a narrative that probes and connects each urban node through critical thinking and reflection.

On a day of immense bravery for the movement against genocide. Thank you to those 70-80 persons that effectively commissioned the ‘militant investigation’ of the Berlin-Spandauer Shipping Canal. We look forward to Berlin showing up for the tour: Energy, Flows, Power and Politics… tomorrow Oct 03.

Studio shoot with 🦉🖤🪬📸 photographer and publicist Ivar Kvaal . 1001 Accurate Memories launched at at (now the Black SW Collective), and earlier in 2025. So-long and thanks for all the memories? Hardly.

During the launch at b_books stephan asked me a tough question that relates to publishing: who do you think are your audience? I wanted to say so many things. That secular society created the need for philosophers to reclaim the narrative from opportunistic ‘free speech advocates’ who hypnotize with half-knowledge. That my audience loves to dream, to become lost in scale and time. That readers are thinkers and if possible, more than anything, I want my work to engender doers.

In this regard, I wrote the last chapter for artist-activists organizing and working in Germany today and to whom I dedicate that chapter in full in this post. Obviously as an overall project 1001… is a very personal one, of self-repair. Begun in a bad state in hospital, obliged to re-learn the parameters of the human body.

Artists are typically blessed with access to metaphysical language and emotional sensitivity. As the state withdraws its financial and political support for us, which has also kept us in a safe bubble - a new culture is already emerging, as the Gaza Biennale and recent Fundraiser in Berlin, and other initiatives demonstrate.

If secular society and the state go hand in hand with colonial violence and white supremacy, let our new culture, after the state, embrace the great gulf in belonging that the Neo-liberal model bequeaths us in its wake. Make no mistake: Art After the State will be much worse.

I hope you can enjoy this chapter. And I want to thank Ivar again for the wonderful photographs not only of this project but also having published and shot Ricochet (that I am currently recording as an audio-book) and those enduring images of Here Comes Trouble, nearly ten years ago… And I want to thank Anna Kostreva: the inspiring, artistic and powerful life-partner I share life with. And all the new relations and relating that has happened in this also very brutal year, back in Berlin.
