In the framework of the 19th International Architecture Biennial of Buenos Aires Sabine Müller will present in her talk "On the edge – challenging spatial conventions" selected imaginary and built projects by SMAQ highlighting the capacity of architecture and urbanism to productively negotiate the contradictions of the contemporary city.

Die Dokumentation des städtebaulichen Werkstattverfahren Rathausblock für das Dragonerareal und die angrenzenden Bereiche in Berlin Kreuzberg, bei dem der Entwurf SMAQ und Man Made Land ausgewählt wurde und dessen Weiterentwicklung wir anschließend weiter begleiten und ausarbeiten durften, liegt nun vor. Wir freuen uns, dass ein weiterer Meilenstein zur Umsetzung des ambitionierten Modellprojekts erreicht ist!

Mit unseren Kooperationspartnern im Modellprojekt Rathausblock haben wir uns das Ziel gesetzt, das Dragonerareal und die angrenzenden Bereiche kooperativ und gemeinwohlorientiert weiterzuentwickeln. In the framework of the internationally invited competition for an urban, creative and residential building block at the mouth of the Oberkanal to the Neckar River in Stuttgart (Germany), SMAQ’s proposal was awarded second prize.

Under the motto “The Neckar as a living space”, one goal of the International Building Exhibition IBA’27 StadtRegion Stuttgart is that Stuttgart grows up to the picturesque and productive reality of the Neckar River.

We propose to keep and transform the existing office building on site and to integrate it into an open courtyard ensemble with approx. 120 residential units, a kindergarten and commercial uses. Through the built figure well-networked urban and neighbourhood spaces of different dimensions with a wide range of uses are formulated. The courtyard act as a distributor, “foyer” of the kindergarten and meeting place. A V-shaped garden courtyard is the green centre of the neighbourhood and invites for garden parties at the canal. The staircase of the existing building facing the bridge over Neckar River is staged to form a welcoming sign. The street will be activated with a commercial “work zone”. The future-oriented combination of living and working comes into play in the open-use floor plan design of the apartment types:

Starter duplexes with private areas on the 1st floor benefit from the possibility to address the public at the ground floor.
Hall-lofts, suitable for communal living, interlock living and working through the multiple-use interface of “entrance halls”.
Flats by the arcade space connecting outdoor areas on both sides of the buildings. Thus the focus of use between living at the balcony and working at the arcade can be gradually shifted. The arcade becomes a meeting place for creative and neighbourly exchange on the floor enriching work in the home office.
