Baugenehmigung für den Neubau der „Jungen Bühne“ in Dortmund

Direkt am entsteht ein neues Haus, das die kulturelle Landschaft der Stadt bereichern und neue Maßstäbe für Jugendtheater setzen wird.
Das JSWD-Konzept wurde in einem internationalen Architekturwettbewerb mit dem 1. Preis ausgezeichnet. Es entsteht ein skulpturaler Baukörper mit patinierter Kupferfassade – als Pendant zur eindrucksvollen Kupferschale über Saal und Foyer der Oper. Die „Junge Bühne“ vervollständigt das Dortmunder Theaterquartier mit einem adressbildenden Gesicht. Das Hauptfoyer ist von außen als Erweiterung des Stadtraums wahrnehmbar.

Letzte Woche wurde die Baugenehmigung für den Neubau erteilt. Die Fertigstellung ist für 2030 geplant.

Right next to the , a new venue is taking shape that will enrich the city’s cultural landscape and set new standards for theater for children and young people.
JSWD’s design was awarded first prize in an international architecture competition. The design features a sculptural building form with a patinated copper facade, conceived as a counterpart to the striking copper shell above the opera hall and foyer. With its distinctive and expressive facade, the Junge Bühne will complete Dortmund’s theater district while creating a strong architectural presence. The main foyer is perceived from the outside as an extension of the urban environment.

The building permit for the new building was issued recently. Completion of the project is scheduled for 2030.

Landschaftsarchitekturpreis für die Confex Plaza der Koelnmesse

Eindrucksvolle und nachhaltige Landschaftserlebnisse schaffen und in Sachen Landschaftsschutz, Klimaanpassung und ökologischer Revitalisierung herausstechen – Projekte, die das erfüllen, werden mit dem nrw.landschaftsarchitektur.preis ausgezeichnet.

Am vergangenen Donnerstag fand in der Zeche Zollverein in Essen die Preisverleihung des Awards statt, der vom (Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekt:innen) ausgelobt wird. Wir freuen uns, dass die Freiraumgestaltung der Confex Plaza eine Anerkennung erhalten hat. Die Begrünung des Vorplatzes der multifunktionalen Messe- und Kongresshalle der hat JSWD gemeinsam mit den Landschaftsarchitekten entwickelt. Die Jury unter dem Vorsitz von Prof. Irene Lohaus lobt: „Es ist hier gelungen, dem Ort unter schwierigsten vegetationstechnischen Bedingungen eine grüne Oase zu spendieren. Die Bepflanzung zeigt ein jahreszeitlich wechselndes und strukturreiches Bild, das auch Insekten und Vögel anlocken dürfte.“

Landscape Architecture Prize for the Confex Plaza at Koelnmesse

The nrw.landschaftsarchitektur.preis honors projects that create outstanding and sustainable landscape experiences, with a particular focus on landscape protection, climate adaptation, and ecological revitalization.

Last Thursday, the prize – awarded by the Federation of German Landscape Architects (bdla) – was presented at the Zollverein in Essen. We are delighted that the outdoor design of the Confex Plaza received recognition from the jury. For the greening of the forecourt of the multifunctional trade fair and congress hall at , JSWD collaborated with landscape architects . Jury Chair Prof. Irene Lohaus praised the work, stating: “You have succeeded in creating a green oasis under the most challenging conditions for vegetation. The planting creates a seasonally changing, richly structured landscape that is also expected to attract insects and birds.”

UKSH in Kiel: Bestandsgebäude werden energetisch ertüchtigt

Ein wichtiger Schritt in Richtung Nachhaltigkeit im Norden: Am Campus Kiel des Universitätsklinikums Schleswig-Holstein (.de) wird ein Teil der Bestandsgebäude seit 2025 schrittweise energetisch saniert.

Neue Fenster und umfassend sanierte Dächer sorgen für eine erhebliche Steigerung der Energieeffizienz. An den Südfassaden der Bettentürme sowie an den Sockelgeschossen werden rund 330 integrierte Photovoltaik-Module angebracht, die sich ins Fassadenbild einfügen. Die Umsetzung erfolgt durch die ARGE UKSH in Kooperation mit der JSWD Health Care GmbH. Fertigstellung ist für Ende 2027 geplant.

Nachdem JSWD bereits bei der Erweiterung des Hauptgebäudes mitgewirkt hat und wir derzeit den Neubau des Kopfzentrums planen, wird mit der Fassadensanierung darauf hingewirkt, dass auch die Bestandsgebäude der Corporate Architecture des UKSH entsprechen.

University hospital in Kiel: Existing buildings undergoing energy retrofitting

Kiel, in northern Germany, is taking an important step toward greater sustainability. At the Kiel campus of the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein (.de ), parts of the existing hospital complex are being gradually retrofitted to improve energy performance.

New windows and comprehensively refurbished roofs are significantly increasing the buildings’ energy efficiency. In addition, around 330 integrated photovoltaic modules will be installed on the south façades of the ward towers and along the podium levels, blending seamlessly into the architectural appearance of the façades. The project is being realized by ARGE UKSH in cooperation with JSWD Health Care GmbH and is scheduled for completion at the end of 2027.

Following JSWD’s involvement in the extension of the main building as well as the current planning of the new Head Center, the façade refurbishment will further align the existing buildings with UKSH’s corporate design concept.

Our design for the MAC Panamá: a material strategy that brings together architecture and climate; a spatial structure that connects the city and the museum.

The museum volume is expressed as a light and abstract object, wrapped in a permeable outer skin of locally sourced clay bricks. The facade responds with its physical and visual features to temperature changes and sunlight. The bricks simultaneously serve as a porous screen, allowing controlled light filtration and ventilation. At night, the luminous envelope ensures an inviting, warm civic presence.

A grand staircase guides visitors toward an elevated public platform that forms the museum’s first plaza. Conceived as an extension of the public realm, this platform accommodates informal gathering, performance, and collective use, strengthening the relationship between the institution and the city.

Unser Konzept für das MAC Panamá: Eine Materialstrategie, die Architektur und Klima verbindet; eine räumliche Struktur, die Stadt und Museum zusammenführt

Das Museumsgebäude präsentiert sich als leichtes, abstraktes Objekt. Die helle, durchlässige Außenhaut besteht aus Lehmziegeln aus der Region. Die Fassade reagiert mit ihren physikalischen und visuellen Eigenschaften auf Temperaturänderungen und die Sonneneinstrahlung. Die Ziegel dienen gleichzeitig als durchlässiger Sichtschutz und ermöglichen eine kontrollierte Lichtdurchlässigkeit und Belüftung. Nachts sorgt die leuchtende Hülle für eine einladende, warme Präsenz im Stadtraum.

Eine großzügige Freitreppe führt zu einer öffentlichen Plattform, über die Besuchende das Museum betreten und die zugleich informelle Zusammenkünfte und Aufführungen ermöglicht. Hier entsteht ein durchlässiger Begegnungsort zwischen der Stadt mit ihren vielfältigen Gemeinschaften und der Institution Museum.

IMCC in Bilbao and San Sebastian: Our Partner Mario Pirwitz at the International Museum Construction Congress

The International Congress (IMCC) regularly brings together museum directors and designers from around the world. Hosted at renowned cultural venues, the congress provides a platform for discussing innovative projects and current trends, while also fostering professional exchange and networking. This year’s event takes place from 10 to 12 May in northern Spain, e.g. at the iconic Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Through projects such as the in Brussels in collaboration with .architectes, JSWD has demonstrated its expertise in the design of cultural buildings. Most recently, we participated in the international competition for the new building of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Panamá (MAC), contributing a conceptual design visualization as part of the submission.

Mario Pirwitz will be attending the congress and looks forward to inspiring conversations and networking in this setting.

Der International Congress (IMCC) bringt regelmäßig und weltweit Museumsleitungen und Designer:innen zusammen. In renommierten Kulturstätten werden innovative Projekte und Trends diskutiert und Erfahrungen ausgetauscht. Vom 10. bis 12. Mai ist das Baskenland, u.a. Bilbao mit seinem ikonischen Guggenheim-Museum Gastgeber des Events.

Mit der Planung des Hauses für Europäische Geschichte in Brüssel hat JSWD in Kooperation mit .architectes seine Expertise im Kulturbau unter Beweis gestellt. Erst jüngst haben wir am internationalen Wettbewerb für einen Neubau des Museum of Contemporary Art of Panamá MAC teilgenommen (Visualisierung).

Unser Partner Mario Pirwitz wird vor Ort sein und freut sich auf anregende Diskussionen und das Netzwerken in diesem Kontext.

AIA Continental Europe Spring Conference: JSWD welcomes participants to our Berlin office

The Chapter of the American Institute of Architects invites its members to the Spring Conference, which will take place in Berlin from May 7 to 10. The four-day program includes excursions to sites across the city that are currently undergoing transformation, as well as to historically significant locations. It also features specialist talks and panel discussions. Members of the Federal Chamber of German Architects (BAK) are also welcome to attend.

We look forward to welcoming participants to our offices on the banks of the Spree on Saturday, May 9. Our Partner Tobias Unterberg will begin with an overview of JSWD’s portfolio, followed by moderation of the event by our Founding General Partner Olaf A. Drehsen. The event will conclude with an opportunity for networking. Registration is still possible via the AIA and the Network for Architecture.

Dialogue with the city: JSWD design for the Museum MAC Panamá

Our contribution to the international open architectural competition for a new building for the Museum of Contemporary Art of Panamá (MAC, ): The new cultural landmark is conceived as a precise architectural figure positioned between the density of Panamá City and the expansive horizon of the Pacific Ocean. A suspended staircase connects the street level to an elevated platform that serves as the museum’s entrance while also serving as an urban meeting point.

The building presents itself as a calm, abstract presence during the day, transforming at night into a sculptural form illuminated from within. Inside, a central atrium organizes the museum as a continuous vertical space.

This spatial configuration allows for a wide range of cultural and social activities.

Culinary spaces are located on the top floor, with a separate entrance that enables events to take place independently of museum opening hours. The design was developed at JSWD’s office in Tampa, Florida.

Unser Beitrag zum internationalen offenen Architekturwettewerb für einen Neubau des Museum of Contemporary Art of Panamá (MAC, ): Der neue Kulturbaustein wird als präzise architektonische Figur zwischen der Dichte von Panamá Stadt und der Weite des pazifischen Horizonts positioniert. Eine Freitreppe führt vom Straßenraum auf eine erhöhte Plattform, die als Entrée ins Museums fungiert und gleichzeitig einen städtischen Treffpunkt bildet.

Das Gebäude wechselt zwischen einer ruhigen, abstrakten Präsenz am Tag und einer von innen leuchtenden Skulptur in der Nacht. Im Inneren strukturiert ein zentrales Atrium das Museum als durchgehenden vertikalen Luftraum.

Das Raumangebot ermöglicht ein breites Spektrum an kulturellen und gemeinschaftlichen Aktivitäten. Auf der obersten Ebene ist Gastronomie platziert – mit separatem Zugang für Veranstaltungen über die Öffnungszeiten des Museums hinaus. Das Konzept wurde im JSWD Office in Tampa, Florida erarbeitet.

JSWD unterstützt die Kunstmeile Rodenkirchen in Köln

Der Stadtteil Rodenkirchen im Kölner Süden wird zum 24. Mal zur dezentralen Galerie. Bis zum 9. Mai stellen fast 30 Geschäfte, Cafés und Restaurants im Veedel Malerei, Skulpturen und Fotografien aus. Wir von JSWD unterstützen die Kunstmeile Rodenkirchen seit Jahren als Sponsor. Dieses Jahr ist das von uns geplante neue Bezirksrathaus Rodenkirchen (derzeit im Bau) selbst Ausstellungsstück: Ein Modell im Maßstab 1:200 zeigt die städtebaulichen Bezüge. Auch die zukünftige Situation mit autofreien Stadtplatz wird visualisiert. Beides ist in der Einkaufspassage Sommershof zu sehen.

Kunst und Architektur können sich wunderbar befruchten - Im Büroquartier Neuer Kanzlerplatz in Bonn hat seinen „Mirror Pavilion“ arrangiert. Die spiralförmig angeordneten Stelen spiegeln die Struktur der von JSWD entwickelten Fassade wieder. Bei der Konzeption stand der dänische Künstler in engem Austausch mit uns.

JSWD supports the Rodenkirchen Art Mile in Cologne

For the 24th time, the Rodenkirchen district in southern part Cologne is transforming into a neighborhood gallery. Leading up to May 9, nearly 30 shops, cafés, and restaurants throughout the Veedel will showcase painting, sculpture, and photography. JSWD has been supporting the Rodenkirchen Kunstmeile (Art Mile) as a sponsor for many years. This year, the new district town hall in Rodenkirchen – currently under construction and planned by JSWD – is itself part of the exhibition. A 1:200 scale model illustrates its urban design context, including the future car-free urban square. Both displays can be viewed in the Sommershof shopping arcade.

Art and architecture mutually inspire one another. At the Neuer Kanzlerplatz office district in Bonn, has arranged his “Mirror Pavilion.” The spiral arrangement of steles reflects the facade structure developed by JSWD. The Danish artist worked closely with us throughout the design process.

Weltkindergartentag: Wie Architektur Lernen und soziale Kompetenz bei Kindern fördert

Am 21. April 1782 wurde Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel geboren. Der deutsche Pädagoge gründete 1840 den ersten Kindergarten der Welt. Zu seinen Ehren wird jährlich am 21. April der Weltkindergartentag begangen.

Bei der Gestaltung von Kitas und Kindergärten hat sich seither vieles weiterentwickelt. Die Räume der von der geführten Kindertagesstätte „Miniapolis“ im Thyssenkrupp Quartier Essen sind ganz an den Bedürfnissen ihrer Nutzenden orientiert: Eine zentrale, zweigeschossige „Piazza“ ist Ort für Gemeinschaft und Begegnung. Auf zwei Ebenen sind Gruppenräume platziert. Eine Bibliothek, eine Holzwerkstatt, ein Atelier sowie ein Mehrzweckraum erlauben individuelles Lernen.

Außen orientiert sich die metallische Schale aus dreidimensional verformten Edelstahlblechen mit ihrer angedeuteten Wellenbewegung an der Corporate Architecture des Quartiers, das heute ruhr tech kampus essen heißt.

Kindergarten Day: How architecture promotes learning and social skills in children

Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel was born on April 21, 1782. The German educator founded the world’s first kindergarten in 1840. In his honor, April 21 is celebrated as Kindergarten Day.

Since Fröbel’s era, the design of daycare centers and kindergartens has evolved significantly. A striking example is the Miniapolis daycare center, operated by and located in the Thyssenkrupp Quartier in Essen. The building is carefully designed around the needs of its users. At its heart, a two-story “piazza” encourages interaction, and informal encounters. Specialized spaces such as a library, a woodworking shop, and an atelier enable individual learning.

On the outside, the building‘s metallic shell reflects the surrounding corporate architecture of the Quartier, now known as ruhr tech kampus essen.
