Together with , gmp is realizing a six-track comprehensive school in 's Heckinghausen district as part of their school construction initiative.

An innovative spatial concept replaces closed classrooms with open “learning landscapes” as teaching methods have shifted away from the traditional lecture-style. Problem-based and independent learning in groups or individually promotes learning success in diverse learning groups. The cafeteria with a kitchen and an auditorium double as multifunctional gathering spaces.
The new school is located on a historic industrial site and will be built using a hybrid construction method. The historic main building of the former metal goods factory will be preserved and integrated into the complex. Building materials recovered during demolition, particularly the bricks used in the existing buildings, will be reused in the new construction and renovation.

This project sends a clear signal for future-oriented construction, combining educational requirements, urban design quality, and ecological responsibility.

Our design for the KĀL AVADHĀRĀ Museum & Planetarium in Somnath, India, has won the 2nd Prize in the international design competition.

The proposal envisions an expansive cultural and knowledge campus that brings together exhibits on the philosophy and measurement of time, astronomy, and mythology within a unique spatial experience.

Inspired by the Indian understanding of time, the design conceives time not as a linear sequence, but as a cycle. Its conceptual foundation is the Vedic notion of the Mahāyuga—the eternal cycle of creation, order, chaos, and renewal. This idea is translated into a spatial narrative in which visitors move through the campus along spiral and circular paths rather than following a linear route. The museum is conceived not as a standalone building, but as part of an ensemble comprising water, landscape, public open spaces, and a 1,500-seat planetarium.

A big thank you to Tractebel and Heritage Network Studio for the excellent collaboration. We would also like to congratulate Vastushilpa Sangath on winning 1st Prize.

Model Matrix Community in Zhangjiang Science City: A mixed-use urban district centered on technology and innovation industries, integrating offices, cultural facilities, apartments, and retail functions.

Three office towers, rising to heights of 150 meters, 110 meters, and 73 meters respectively, establish a visual relationship through their facade design. Each tower incorporates double- to triple-height “sun halls” that serve as shared communication spaces within the vertical office environment.

The podium buildings follow a “stacked box” design strategy. Their horizontally extended low-rise volumes, characterized by large, glazed openings, create an urban scale that relates to the surrounding public realm. In addition to retail and dining functions, the podiums accommodate open and shared office spaces for young entrepreneurs and start-ups.

The two residential buildings are arranged in offset configuration, allowing a greater number of apartments to benefit from views toward the wetland park. Following the “live-and-work nearby” concept, the apartments are primarily intended for young researchers and professionals working in Zhangjiang Science City.

The Shanghai Jiushi Art Museum has relocated to its new exhibition spaces on the first and second floors of the historic Asia Building on the Bund.

Guided by the principle of “Continuity, not Replacement,” we reopened the long-sealed windows to reconnect the interior with the Bund’s iconic skyline and views of the Huangpu River. The historic window frames were carefully preserved in their original condition.

Classic parquet flooring was reinstated, echoing the character of historic buildings along the Bund. The design also maximizes the preservation of the original ceiling system, minimizing unnecessary interventions and material waste.

The new arrival area on the second floor integrates ticketing, cloakroom, and information into a clear and efficient sequence.

We celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the 3rd Comprehensive School in Grevenbroich in mid-April.

The newly established 3rd Comprehensive School in Grevenbroich is replacing the former campus of the Dietrich-Uhlhorn Secondary School. An existing building dating back to 1964 has already been demolished. The extension buildings from 1996 and 2003 will continue to be used by the secondary school during the construction phase of the new buildings and will be renovated once the new school buildings are completed.

At the start of the 2027/2028 school year, the comprehensive school will move from its temporary location to its new permanent campus.

To ensure long-term operation, the existing building stock is being significantly expanded. A new classroom wing with specialized rooms for art and science, a teaching kitchen, and a new administration wing will complement the overall space program.

In addition to the renovation and expansion measures, the construction of a new three-court sports hall with the necessary changing rooms and auxiliary spaces is also planned. A central feature of the full-day school concept is a cafeteria, which can also be used as an event venue. A stage and a spacious foyer are also planned for this purpose.

A huge thank you to the entire team that has supported the project through to this important milestone!

The Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize, China’s highest honor for architects, is now presented in a permanent exhibition. A dedicated museum has been created for this purpose in Lizhuang, China’s Sichuan Province.

The 500-square-meter exhibition showcases the biographies and award-winning works of all recipients of the Liang Sicheng Architecture Prize. Among them is Meinhard von Gerkan, founding partner of gmp and recipient of the 9th Liang Sicheng Prize.

Von Gerkan was the first architect from outside Asia to receive this prestigious award.

His most significant project in China, the National Museum of China, is presented in the exhibition through photographs, models, and video installations.

Architecture in the Park: The Alibaba Center in Hangzhou’s Future Sci-Tech City demonstrates how technology, human-centered design, and nature can coexist in a carefully designed context.

Surrounded by water on three sides, the site benefits from outstanding natural landscape features. Vertical setbacks, roof gardens, and sunken courtyards form a network of open spaces. The ground floor is shaped by an open and transparent design that connects internal landscape spaces with the city’s public realm. A comprehensive pedestrian network links the different building clusters with the main entrances and the park to the south.

Completed in 2025, the project is conceived as a response to evolving work patterns and the needs of a younger workforce.

In 1965, gmp – which had just been founded – unexpectedly and spectacularly won in the competition for Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) against 68 other architects. A year later the airport was commissioned and soon turned into an icon after its opening in 1974.

Designed as a hexagon, the airport is known for its short distances. Departing guests practically “drove to their gate”. From their car, parked right below the departure area, it only took a flight of stairs to reach the check-in counter and the boarding gate. Arriving guests needed mere 10 minutes to go from the plane to their waiting taxi. TXL was originally intended to handle a maximum of 2.5 million passengers per year but handled more than 22 million before its closure in 2020.

In the coming weeks, we will share more projects and materials from our archives, spanning more than 60 years of our office’s history. Stay tuned!

The Leipzig Trade Fair is one of the world's oldest trading centers and was revitalized after German reunification in a new location. This April, the new trade fair celebrates its 30th anniversary. After only three years of construction, opened in 1996.

Designed by gmp, the new exhibition grounds were built in one of the largest construction projects in Eastern Germany. The concept for the fair is simple: visitors first venture into a central valley formed by a continuous landscaped park lying one level below the exhibition halls. The entrance hall, with its extra-high roof, is the largest hall and serves as a multipurpose venue. With an 80-meter span and 240-meter length, it is the landmark of the trade fair complex in combination with the elegant tower. Its counterpart is the conference and congress center. A spacious staircase connects the foyers in front of the halls. The dome's 30,000 square meters of glass are held in place by point fixings, forming a self-supporting structure. This allows for perfect lighting, and a natural ventilation system maintains pleasant temperatures.
