In the spring edition of Star & Furrow, Feya Marince — co-founder of the Indigenous Biodynamic Association of Africa — shares a story that feels both ancient and urgently relevant.

As a child, she watched farmers remove their shoes before planting.

Years later, a 96-year-old farmer explained why:

Before sowing seeds, they would stand barefoot on the earth, holding the seed in their hand, allowing the connection to flow through their body into the soil — while setting an intention for a healthy harvest.

“The farmers knew how the living Earth, humans, and the cosmos are connected in farming.”

Feya speaks openly about the damage caused by imposed industrial farming, but she also speaks about reconnecting with indigenous knowledge, restoring local identity, and developing an “African way” of biodynamics.

At a time when industrial agriculture continues to treat land as something to extract from, this interview offers another way of seeing.
