What a nice surprise-find on our 2nd last day of our awesome trip to Cerro Neblina. We found this beautiful Strophocactus wittii right in the garden of our hotel 😀. Strophocacus is notable as an ant plant. Ants live underneath the flat shoots that can really wrap around trees. They are also special for creating floating seeds that are dispersed by water in forests that are temporarily flooded.

It was like a dream coming true. Ca. 25 years after having climbed Cerro Neblina in Brasil I had the chance to visit the spectacular Heliamphoras up here again.

We are looking for a new distributor in the USA:
In order to take account of the new circumstances with tariffs and the associated explosion in costs, and to reduce further high import costs, we are explicitly looking for someone who is located near an international airport with a USDA station and who can receive the deliveries themselves in order to at least avoid additional high costs and transport risks here that we covered in the past.
The importer would need to work with a customs agent there. We have had good experiences with customs agents in New York and Miami but I’m sure there are agents in other airports as well that are familiar with USDA-regulations.
The importer should have experience with carnivorous plants, but should not operate a nursery themselves or import from competitors on commercial scale in order to avoid conflicts of interest from the very beginning.
We cover all costs incurred for onward shipping, registration with the customs agent, etc., and pay a fair value-based commission for the work involved plus free bonus plants ;-)

Nepenthes hamata - If there were a competition among Nepenthes to see who had the most extreme teeth, Nepenthes hamata would win hands down. The picture shows an upper pitcher. Upper pitcher in this species typically are green except for thze extremely fine dark veins while the lower pitchers are much darker and have blackish peristome teeth. This dimorphism seen in many species of Nepenthes is driven by the different prey spectrums of the two pitcher types.

Nepenthes rigidifolia - Unfortunately, the known population of Nepenthes rigidifolia has been wiped out almost completely by poaching and habitat destruction.
I am very happy to announce, that we will soon start offering tissue cultured plants of this critically endangered species and hope that sustainably produced plants will take pressure from the remaining plants that still grow in their natural habitat and which are in great danger of getting poached to extinction.

Myrmecodia spec. (Myrmecodia tuberosa 'versteegii') - This species is currently often referred to as Myrmecodia tuberosa 'versteegii'.
Well, I don't think that it really fits into Myrmecodia tuberosa at all and certainly deserves to be named as a separate and good species.
I took the photograph 2015 on an expedition to West Papua near Nabire.

The newly described Nepenthes ulukaliana, formerly mostly referred to as Nepenthes macfarlanei in error.
To me, this is a highly underrated species and certainly ranks among my favorites!
It's mainly known from Gunung Ulu Kali in the Genting Highlands of Peninsula Malaysia.

Myrmecodia spec. Dinagat island, Philippines. This picture, taken in 2010 shows an undescribed species of Myrmecodia growing together with a Dischidia (also a myrmecophyte plant) in a so called ant garden. One can often find myrmecophyte plant species from totally different groups together on the same tree, giving home to a huge colony of ants.

Myrmecodia lamii, the biggest ant plant of the Hydnophytinae clade known so far is also my personal favorite plant. It looks to me like an organism from another world, stranded in the unaccessable highlands of Papua. Scanned from an old slide, taken in the year 2000 on Mt. Doormanstop.

Squamellaria major, one of the most beautiful species of Squamellaria, a relatively little known genus of myrmeciphytes belonging to the Hydnophytinae.
Note the concentric rings of holes that function as entries to the highly complex system of chambers and tunnels inside the caudex. The caudex is the home of an ant colony!
