Future-Proof Design: Balancing Creativity, Practicality, and Technology with Groundwork Architects
Kelvin Kong’s journey from a childhood passion for design and creative arts to becoming the design director at Groundwork Architects is a testament to his dedication and vision. From sketching and building with Legos to discovering the blend of drawing and technical skills in architecture during a pivotal high school course, Kelvin’s path has been marked by continuous learning and innovation. After earning degrees from Cornell and Harvard, Kelvin honed his skills in technical drawing and project management through major museum projects in Abu Dhabi.
Choosing a unique path, Kelvin explored interior design for ten years before joining Groundwork Architects. His transition from interior design to architecture provided insights into both fields, revealing the intricate balance between regulatory compliance and creative expression. His tenure at Groundwork underscores the firm’s commitment to client engagement and adaptable design solutions, navigating complexities with flexibility and proactive communication.
“Our projects balance creativity and practicality, with flexibility and client communication at the forefront,” says Kelvin. He emphasises the integration of cutting-edge technologies in architectural design, ensuring solutions that evolve alongside technological advancements. Projects reflect Groundwork’s dedication to dynamic, adaptable spaces utilising advanced materials and flexible configurations.
Working with Groundwork Architects’ branch in Shenzhen has further allowed Kelvin to immerse himself in a culture more receptive to bold and innovative architectural ideas. He notes the contrast between the Mainland and Hong Kong design communities, with the former embracing experimentation and pushing boundaries. Motivated by this openness and Groundwork’s community focus, Kelvin is ready to take on more client-facing, community-engaged roles, driving innovative exploration and meaningful impact.
