It has been known for some time that plants emit ultrasound that is too high-pitched to be heard by humans. For example, the sound can be heard directly on the bark of trees. This sound is created by water flowing through the vessels of the plant. Just like you hear water flowing through the water pipes in the wall of a house. 🧑🏻‍🔬

The existence of these sounds was already known. But Israeli plant scientists were the first to observe them from a distance with directional microphones, in newer research. 🎙️

The researchers recorded the sound of tomato and potato plants. Some were healthy, others did not receive enough water or were cut down. They put these recordings into an artificial intelligence program that learned the difference between the groups of plants.

The computer programme could tell the difference between dried out and cut plants with 70% accuracy. The program was even better at separating healthy and unhealthy plants.

Of course, it is also possible that other plants are listening. It is still controversial whether there is communication with sound from one plant to another. Some studies are finding evidence: in one study, for example, flowers produced sweeter nectar after hearing a bee's buzz. 🐝

Other researchers made the plants hear caterpillar sounds. They then began to make specific chemicals to defend themselves. But it is still very controversial whether the sound is biologically relevant.

This area of research is still very early... but we are here to learn more! How interesting and mesmerising is this? 😃🌿🎼🌱
