- Floor heating systems 💚

The most common is cast floor heating systems in concrete or floor heating systems made from materials with high CO2 impact. At nikolova/aarsø, we advise our clients to use more energy-efficient floor heating systems.

In this post, we’d like to highlight two types of floor heating systems with a lower CO2 impact: Lithotherm and Farmacel Therm 25. Both systems use dry-laid panels, which allow for faster, cleaner installation compared to traditional systems embedded in concrete. They are also easier to install, maintain, and repair, and—most importantly—can be reused in the future. The panels feature channels or grooves designed to house hydronic (water-based) heating pipes.

The Lithotherm system is made from natural stone and lava chippings, materials known for their excellent thermal properties. These properties enable it to absorb, store, and radiate heat efficiently. The stone panels act as a thermal mass, reducing energy consumption by storing heat and releasing it gradually, meaning the system doesn’t need to run constantly.

The Farmacel Therm 25 system, which we used in the project, is made from gypsum.

Both systems are ideal for retrofitting projects or in areas where heavy construction is best avoided.

– Silent reed - acoustic wall panel 💚

Reeds are tall, grass-like plants that grow in wetlands. They have hollow stems and are used in construction for thatching roofs, making fences, and crafting. Reeds are lightweight, flexible, water-resistant, and also play a role in filtering water and preventing erosion in natural habitats.

The reed is a fast growing plant and removes CO₂ from the air all year round.
The acoustic panels shown in the pictures are from the dutch company produced and harvested in Friesland. The Netherlands have reestablished their lowland soils, where crops like reed can grow and become a local bio-based building product. Enhancing the and the natural soil conditions.

is also locally soured in Denmark, mainly used for roofing. But more building products from reed can be established. We can definitely learn more from the Netherlands.

The material has an acoustics AW-value of 1,0 and there are no formaldehyde added.

Big thank you to the municipality of Guldborgsund (Guldborgsund Kommune) for hosting the event “New Local Value Chain: H**p From Field to Wall”.

It was an informative day with participants from both the agriculture, construction, public and private developer sector – all the links needed to form a strong new value chain of growing industrial h**p, produce building materials and get these materials in use on the construction site.

Our co-founder Jonas Aarsø had the privilege to present the ideas behind the coming “Hampens Hus” a project designed to show as many possibilities with h**p as a building material, and also to present and explain a wide variety of products already available and in use from all around the world.
The day started with an exiting visit to Agrovi - Videncenteret for landbrug og erhvervs test field with industrial h**p at on Falster where they have planted industrial h**p and at collecting data in order to be able to better consult farmers to make the shift into industrial h**p production.

Thank you also to Trine Panton for being the moderator of the remaining day´s presentation. To Henrik Kruse Rasmussen and Jørgen Heggelund to present their experiences with growing h**p in Denmark. To Bodil Pallesen, one of the h**p pioneers in Denmark, to present their studies on industrial h**p at danish technological institute and their involvement in a decade long monitoring and studying of the h**p production by Jørgen Heggelund.

We can only change the construction industry and the agriculture industry if we fully embrace their dependency on each other in a bio-based present and future."

Imagine being a builder and having glass wool in one hand and 100% sheep wool in theother. What would you choose to build with?

We might not always consider what hides between our walls. However, many conventional building materials have high concentrations of VOC emissions. Sheep wool contains no such chemicals, therefore it does not emit harmful substances, providing a very good indoor environment.
Sheep wool is a renewable resource, as sheep grow new fleece annually. It is biodegradable and can be recycled.

Sheep wool has excellent thermal insulation properties, helping to keep buildings warm in winter and cool in summer. It effectively traps air within its fibers, which acts as a natural insulator. Wool can absorb moisture from the air without compromising its insulating properties. It can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp, helping regulate humidity levels.Wool is naturally flame-retardant due to its high nitrogen and water content. It has a high ignition temperature and burns slowly.

Sheep’s wool also provides good insulation.

The wool used for insulation comes from European sheep typically raised for meat and milk production, or for grazing in natural reserves. Since sheep need to be sheared regularly to manage their wool growth, a significant amount of wool is produced that often goes to waste. Due to global market prices for wool, it is actually cheaper in Europe to discard wool rather than process it into valuable products.

Animal welfare is crucial to our company's vision; therefore, we only collaborate with companies that uphold high standards of sheep welfare.

We think that the new black is black pigment from OurCarbon by BioForceTech Corporation. They have developed a system that captures carbon created in our waste before it is released into our environment.

By harvesting it from organic waste materials, such as food waste, agricultural residues, or other biomass, the selected feedstock undergoes pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition process that occurs in the absence of oxygen. During pyrolysis, the organic material is subjected to high temperatures (typically between 300-700°C), breaking it down into various by-products, including biochar, syngas, and bio-oil. The bio- pigment is created before the carbon is released and breaks down into methane.

So why not give your wood a black coating with OurCarbon black pigment? It is differently a better alternative to traditional carbon black pigments.

– Cork 💚

For the love of Cork. Unfortunately, cork has a misconception that we are running short of it. But we are not. We believe that cork should be more widely implemented in our built environment because it is a very friendly from a . It is like sheep wool needing to be trimmed.

The cork oak tree is not harmed during the harvesting process, as only the bark is stripped off, allowing the tree to regenerate. This can be done every 9 to 12 years, and cork oak trees can live up to 200 years.

has an excellent thermal and acoustic insulator due to its cellular structure, which contains millions of tiny air pockets. This makes it ideal for reducing heat loss and noise pollution in buildings. Cork's natural elasticity and compressibility make it useful for applications requiring flexibility, such as flooring. It can withstand considerable pressure without losing its shape. Cork is also lightweight, which makes it easy to handle, install, and transport.

Cork can be used for interiors, acoustic solutions, flooring, facades, and even in construction, such as in foundations. We look forward to sharing some of our projects where we have used cork as a building material.

Stay tuned and PM us for more information.

– I am blue, ladedi ladeda..💚

In this post, we would like to demonstrate that using biobased and circular materials canprovide a colorful and tactile experience.

Biobased materials often face the stereotype of being beige, dull, or unattractive compared to conventional materials. This is why we are showcasing a palette of blue material samples made from renewable and recycled resources.

The mood board is composed of clay, scales, skin, wool felt, and jeans.

We hope this inspires you to see that only the imagination sets the limits when it comes to biobased building materials.
