It's cold outside 🥶

Large parts of Copenhagen have frozen over in recent weeks, with temperatures below zero. At The Tip of Nordø, the harbour edge reveals its seasonal transformation where ice, water, and landscape merge into a continuous urban nature.

Located at the very tip of Nordø and surrounded by water on three sides, the project establishes a new public landscape and destination in Copenhagen’s North Harbour. A sequence of urban nature, harbour promenade, and winter garden extends the public realm to the edge of the city and strengthens the connection between people, city, and sea, creating an accessible and resilient landscape throughout the seasons.

Urbanplanen Syd, an active youth- and child-focused urban development on Amager, is a prime example of holistic city planning, where new buildings, landscape transformation, and social functions are designed together as one cohesive urban framework.

Nature and landscape are essential to the project’s vision. A series of sustainable rainwater basins and ponds not only manages stormwater but also enhances biodiversity and recreational quality. Edible plants, green corridors, and public gathering spaces connect the area, making nature a functional, educational, and social resource embedded in daily city life.

A former football field has been transformed into a climate adapted public landscape, creating new connections, meeting points, and opportunities for outdoor life. Through integrated green infrastructure, terrain shaping, and careful consideration of protected trees, the project demonstrates both technical and aesthetic expertise in sensitive landscape interventions.

Thoughtful planning ensured that existing wildlife, including protected species, could remain part of the evolving landscape, showing that nature and urban life can coexist seamlessly. The completed Urbanplanen Syd demonstrates how new construction and landscape transformation, as part of a broader climate strategy for Amager, can be integrated into a single, coherent architectural and urban planning approach.

Remember to visit Habitat 25 at DAC!

Did you know that just 30 m² of mushrooms can replace what would normally require 3,000 m² of land for meat and feed production?

Habitat 25, a part of the exhibition Age of Nature at demonstrates how cities can become productive ecologies by integrating food cultivation directly into their spatial and cultural infrastructure.

The installation transforms the Danish Architecture Center’s modular system into a circular mushroom-growing chamber, wrapped in translucent membranes and climate-controlled to support continuous, zero-waste production. Using upcycled organic waste such as coffee grounds and sawdust as substrate, the chamber turns what is normally discarded into nourishment, showing how architecture can act as an active metabolic agent in the city.

Habitat 25 is part of the Age of Nature exhibition at DAC and developed by Third Nature Architects in collaboration with . The exhibition runs until May 17, 2026.

More life to the streets of Copenhagen!

16 streets in Copenhagen. One shared ambition: more urban life.

We’re excited to share that Third Nature won the tender for Bylivsgader – Phase 3, as part of the 's Grant for Lively Streets.

Building on our experience from Phase 2, we’re now working across an expected total of 16 streets in Copenhagen, selected through citizen applications and dialogue. Together, we’re reclaiming street space for more greenery, better places to stay, and reduced car dominance.

According to the City of Copenhagen’s Mobility Report 2024, 58% of the space between buildings is currently used for carriageways and parking. Through targeted, surface-based interventions, we’re helping turn streets into places to stay – not just places to pass through.

In collaboration with LINQ Trafikrådgivning, we’re creating calmer, greener and more people-focused streets.

Reimagining temporary modular components as iconic, adaptable, and flexible buildings that introduce a new aesthetic in ever-evolving and challenging environments.

The Gate Building is the first building on Lynetteholm. Based on the principles of design for disassembly, this single-story, sawtooth-shaped structure is composed of 17 identical angled modules covering an area of approximately 1.000 m².

Building in an environment characterized by wind, dust, and noise requires a pragmatic approach and proven technical solutions. The primary objective is to create shelter, protection, and visibility in a straightforward and robust manner. In essence, the Gate Building on Lynetteholm represents not just a functional asset but also an example of architectural ingenuity and adaptability, achieving maximum value with minimal environmental impact.

Reconnecting Hundested with its waterfront

By turning the town towards the coast, unfolding a blue-green landscape of experiences through the in-between spaces and creating locally rooted places, the habour of Hundested is rediscovered as the heart of the town.

Third Nature, together with Clement Blanchet Architecture and Kvistgaard+Hird, has been selected to lead the future development of Hundested. The project emerges from an open parallel competition in collaboration with Halsnæs Kommune, Realdania, and Dansk Kyst- og Naturturisme.

The strategic physical masterplan opens the possibility of shaping a renewed identity - one that honours the past while restoring the town’s connection to the waterfront. The ambition is to create an example of how a place can grow with a changing world by uniting nature and culture into a stronger, more vibrant, and more resilient destination for years to come.

Reimagining the City of Esbjerg as an interconnected urban network where climate resilience, mobility, and green connectivity converge to enhance the city’s unique identity and build community. In 2023, Third Nature won the 1st prize in the planning competition for the City of Esbjerg.

Esbjerg will introduce scalable and future-proof solutions that promote green energy, expand public spaces, and improve mobility through pedestrian-friendly zones. A key part of the city's transformation involves reconnecting with its coastal roots and creating a more balanced urban environment.

Esbjerg’s transformation aims to strike a balance between contemporary urban living and environmental responsibility. By revitalizing key districts and connecting green spaces, the city will become a beacon of innovation and future-proof urban life, combining natural beauty, energy, and city living into a resilient and thriving community.

Circle Space explores how low carbon, permeable paving can shape the cities of tomorrow!

Klimafilterbeton is designed to manage future rainwater volumes, enrich the urban landscape, support biodiversity, and create new possibilities for public life. The material is cast using FutureCem, tested outdoors for the first time and for the first time applied in permeable concrete, bringing a climate-friendly cement with up to 35% CO₂e reduction into the process.

The pilot area at Teknologisk Institut in Taastrup documents its performance over time and lays the groundwork for future urban projects, showing how thoughtful materials and design can turn infrastructure into resilient, adaptable, and inviting public spaces.

LEGCAY: Turning Climate Challenges into Urban Opportunities

Cities face the challenge of adapting to climate change while providing parking in dense areas.

The speculative study POP UP merges underground stormwater reservoirs with dynamic parking structures, freeing up to 2.000 m² of green space for parks, recreation, and community life. Below ground, 30.000 m³ of stormwater storage protects neighborhoods from cloudbursts, while 400 parking spaces reduce traffic congestion.

Developed as a speculative study with and , POP-UP was tested in case studies in Copenhagen and New York, showing significant gains in efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and land release.

Third Nature Exhibits Habitat 25 at DAC

Habitat 25 is a living installation that cultivates food, climate awareness, and future imaginaries within the city. Installed in the heart of Copenhagen, it transforms the Danish Architecture Centre’s structure into a circular mushroom-growing chamber, producing high-value food and freeing land through radically efficient urban farming.

The installation explores the potential of small-scale urban habitats, demonstrating how cities can produce high-value food while utilizing materials that would otherwise go to waste. Compared to traditional beef production, the same nutritional output would require over 100 times more land. By relocating food production to urban environments, vast areas of countryside can be released for rewilding, biodiversity, and ecosystem restoration.

Habitat 25 represents a new typology where architecture becomes an active metabolic agent, absorbing waste streams, producing food, and creating new ecological relationships.

Habitat 25 is part of the Age of Nature exhibition at DAC and was developed by Third Nature in collaboration with Lasse Antoni Carlsen. The exhibition runs until May 17, 2026.

Enghavepark's profound transformation into Copenhagen's largest climate project serves a dual purpose: To address the city's pressing water challenges and breathe new life into its historical and cultural heritage.

During heavy rain, the park collects and stores water to protect the surrounding neighbourhood. In everyday use, it is a vibrant green space where water, nature, and urban life coexist. Through this approach, climate adaptation is made visible and accessible, and the park becomes both resilient infrastructure and a space for people to meet, linger, and enjoy the city.

Enghaveparken shows how extreme climate adaptation can be integrated with cultural heritage, creating a public space that strengthens the city’s resilience while offering new opportunities for social life and urban nature.

Enghaveparken is created by Third Nature in collaboration with COWI and Platant for City of Copenhagen, Greater Copenhagen Utility (HOFOR), Area Renewal Secretary. Completed in 2019.
