NORD Architects is a creative office in Copenhagen, Denmark We call it process design.

NORD Architects is known by the ability to develop and innovate content and engage with the clients and users relating to a project. Our work is often characterized by a high level of complexity that is organized and embodied in a specific design. We consider every project we undertake as a process of change
Therefore we focus on how to design the process itself. This method has resulted in the re

alization of several prizewinning projects spanning from the development of new types of institutions, urban spaces, urban development strategies and learning environments. NORD Architects was established in 2003 by founding partners Johannes Molander Pedersen and Morten Rask Gregersen (both b. 1974).During the years we have employed a multidisciplinary staff of urban planners, architects, landscape architects, process consultants, art historians, academics within social and cultural studies along with our technical staff. Besides realizing various projects, we are often asked to lecture and have been taking part in exhibitions and publications on several occasions. NORD Architects operates as total advisors, collaborators and client advisors on projects within the public and private sector.

FURUSET FEATURED IN THE ARCHIRECTURAL REVIEW

« Furuset Hageby, coming to the end of its first year in operation, approaches its users with both care and determination, and points the way forward in the continuing process of finding better ways to care for this rapidly growing patient group »

Writes Feliks Ulvåen Isaksen in the April issue of The Architectural Review.

The issue takes a stethoscope to healthcare buildings and includes a piece about NORD Architects and 3RW arkitekters Furuset Hageby Dementia Village.

« a micro-environment where people with dementia are gently encouraged to lead active lives »

Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center: Just like home

One critical aspect of the Memory Center will be providing residents with a sense of normalcy, the feeling of being at home within a secure environment. To feel at home, everything that reminds one of an institution is avoided.

Fourteen households, each with 10 private bedrooms and the amenities of a typical home, will be centered around a common building.

Various offers and activities make it easy to find a place where you can feel at home and maintain everyday activities, such as going to a cafe, to the hairdresser and to the gym. Individual wishes and needs are handled with respect for the individual resident. Relatives and other visitors must feel welcome too and be able to participate in activities and meals.

WAYFINDING AND RECOGNITION:
Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center

Wayfinding is an essential part of designing for memory care.

The design of The Memory Care Center in Pennsylvania aims to create recognizable spaces where residents affected by dementia can freely explore and experience the entire seven-acre campus which includes a grocery store, bakery, ice cream shop, sit-down restaurant, dance and fitness studio, meditation room, salon and spa, performance stage, greenhouse, adult day center, and expansive outdoor courtyard.

Simple methods such as changing facade colors to give each section a unique identity can help the residents remember where to go. In addition, the private residencies have items in front significant to the residents to make their own room recognizable. The layout of the rooms is designed with direct views and accessibility to increase the independency of the residents. Landmarks and varying elements in the landscape will also help the residents to find their way around the village.

Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center: A centre of excellence

There is still a lot we do not know about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Yet more people globally are affected by the neurodegenerative disease. There are currently estimated to be over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia. The number of people affected is set to rise to 139 million by 2050 (Alzheimer’s Disease International).

The new Memory Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is a specialized dementia care facility with 140 dementia units for individual care and also acts as a center of excellence: A resource center for volunteers as well as a research- and knowledge center for neurologists, neuropsychologists and other research personnel.

Within the Memory Center an Assessment and Treatment Center will offer essential components for memory loss prevention, early diagnosis, assessment, treatment and support. The Brain Tech Center will further research.

NORD Architects is designing the Memory Center for Valley Communities. A driven developer and health care advocate with ambitions to push the boundaries for dementia care and enhance the quality of life for people affected directly or indirectly by dementia.

ARCHITECTURE FOR AGING WELL TOGETHER /
POINT DE VUE I VERS UNE ARCHITECTURE DU BIEN VIEILLIR ENSEMBLE

About a third of French people will be over 60 years old in 2060 according to Insee; The French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies.

French architecture magazine – Séquences Bois' – winter issue focus on how the demographic changes is pushing architects to rethink our housing models to create adapted environments that promote autonomy and well-being for elderly people.

The article has included the two NORD-projects of Furuset Hageby Dementia Village and Alzheimer's Village Dax as examples of innovative projects, offering a radically different vision.

Mom, dad and two kids – the nuclear family structure is still in center when designing family homes. However Danish architects experiment with new ways of living – for patchwork families, single parents, seniors or the more modern nuclear family.

If you happen to be in Berlin between July 17 – October 6. You should visit the exhibition ‘Gemeinsam glücklich. Anders wohnen in Dänemark’!

Seven groundbreaking Danish architectural projects are exhibited to explore how housing can respond to the current climate crisis, future urban challenges, shifting family patterns and new ways of living.

The exhibition is curated by the Danish Embassy in Berlin and NORD Architects and is funded by Dreyers Fond. It is based on the experimental housing project The Housing Lab launched by Statens Kunstfond and Realdania. NORD has been the project office since it’s beginning.

Next, the exhibition will cross the Atlantic Ocean to visit Seattle and Portland in the US!

----

It was a pleasure to present to a well-prepared audience in Drammen, Norway at this year's INNSIKT 2004 City Development Conference.

Here, partner in NORD Architects, Johannes Molander Pedersen, presented our experiences with health-promoting urban development. How we can meet the aging population and emerging health crisis by implementing new strategies, physical frameworks and concepts for health and community-based health care services.

Introducing the new ‘school at Dybbølsbro’ – formerly known as the ‘Meatpacking District School’

NORD recently visited the construction site to witness the school’s rapid progress.

The new school is taking shape as the missing corner wrenched in between the historical Meatpacking District and Dybbølsbro bridge and creates a coherent architecture that seals the former gate in the corner, where the cattle once entered the meatpacking area.
The white Meatpacking district is a treasured urban area in Copenhagen, famous for its meat production history, recognized for its white modernistic architecture and popular amongst many for the variety of restaurants, nightlife and the new creative hood. Dybbølsbro Bridge is an important junction connecting the city. Integrating the new school in this context, creates an open and vibrant learning environment, where city and school blend.

We can’t wait to visit the site again and experience the school in action once the children have taken on their new learning environment.
