Rafn.Studio has been selected to develop a new vision plan for Holbæk Municipality.

The vision plan for Kalvemose Å can become a key part of Holbæk’s green transition, providing a coherent framework that both embraces the city and opens it toward the wider cultural landscape.

The project’s focus is to enable the planned urban development along Holbæk’s southern edge by developing nature-based solutions for managing surface water from the development areas, while also relieving pressure on Kalvemose Å.

At the same time, the vision will aim to create the greatest possible synergy with the Green Tripartite Agreement. Along the 20 km river system, large areas have been designated for land take-out, where connected landscapes can deliver nitrogen reduction, climate benefits, and restored nature.

Kalvemose Å’s catchment covers 3,900 hectares, including 460 hectares designated under the tripartite framework, comprising a combination of potential low-lying areas, wetlands, and priority areas close to the river and the coast.

Our approach is grounded in a strategic reading of the sub-areas around Kalvemose Å as a hydrological system, a recreational asset, and a landscape of opportunity for nature restoration.

Welcome to Rafn.Studio

The website is now live, and with it a new practice founded by Flemming Rafn, former co-founder of Third Nature Architects.

2026 is year 1 of the 25 years we have left until 2050, the year we have promised each other to be climate neutral. A promise that changes what we measure as success, and which tasks, processes, and collaborations must follow if the transition is to happen at a more reasonable pace.

For a long time I have had a growing sense that the architect’s point of departure must change. Many of the necessary insights have arrived, and many solutions are already developed. Yet implementation is far too slow, and too many business models continue against better knowledge, as if we still have time to sub-optimise a direction that is, in itself, without a future.

We live in a deeply contrasting moment. The foundations of society feel unstable, and everything appears inseparably entangled: cities, people, culture and nature, resources and meaning. The consequences are complex. The conditions for how life can unfold, human and more-than-human, are under pressure and call for different imaginings of the future.

I was recently struck by Rebecca Solnit’s line on hope: “The future is dark, with a darkness as much of the womb as to the grave.” Rafn.Studio works in the field between regenerative architecture and formed nature, developing imaginaries, prototypes, and systems that can bring hope to the future we know is necessary.

The site includes a 3-minute portrait film. Thank you to Benjamin Jesselholdt, Eva Ørum, and Dansk Arkitektur Center - DAC for the loan of the film. You are very welcome to follow along on the new channels, and to reach out.
