COOPERATION ABOUT BIO-BASED BUILDING MATERIALS

Last year Det Levende Hus entered into a collaboration with Davidsen Tømmerhandel to promote the use of bio-based building materials in order to make it more widespread in Denmark.

One of the ideas behind Det Levende Hus has always been to make climate-friendly living more commercial and common.
In that process, we must, among other things, cooperation with the established timber traders on the market, as they can scale the sale of bio-based building materials so that it is no longer a niche.

Davidsen Tømmerhandel has a professionalism and friendliness that suits Det Levende Hus well. At the same time we also have easy access to their products and delivery rates all over the country.

When we build our projects, we need security of delivery, delivery at the right time and an overview of the environmental impact of the building materials.

In this way, our customers also do not experience any difference using bio-based building materials and thereby find it easier to choose.

We also now sit together with Davidsens Tømmerhandel and inspire each other about which bio-based building materials and producers they should include in the future.

The goal with these talks is to make it easier for other craftsmen and customers to use this kind of bio-based building materials, so that it becomes more widespread and common.

Davidsens Tømmerhandel is also the only Danish timber trader that supports Reduction Roadmap, like +560 other companies, organizations and municipalities, so that we get a building legislation that reflects climate science.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

2023 was the year we at could physically see the results of all our efforts that began back in 2021.

Two of our buildings are now completed and we have learned a lot from them and especially The Forest House at Glumsø is a huge step forward for us.

The Forest House shows where we are moving towards with our future projects. Not only visually, but also around building methods, building materials and how our buildings can be arranged inside.

Through our projects, we have proven that we can already build climate-friendly buildings in bio-based building materials, which are better than the traditional way we are used to build. Something that the rest of the construction industry is struggling to get started with.

The Forest House in Glumsø, we can now reveal, has an LCA of 5.3 kg CO2 eq/m2/year, which is around half the CO2 emitted from an ordinary home today.

There is a growing interest in what we do both in the construction industry, but also among customers. Something that will be revealed to you very soon via new projects and collaborations in 2024.

YUKIMI - The Forest House at Glumsø

In Japan, there is a seasonal activity called "Yukimi", which means that you enjoy watching the snow or the snowy landscape.
It is comparable to enjoying "Hanami" in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom In Japan.

Snow in Japan symbolize the fragility of life and the transience of beauty.

UPDATE ON YAMORI

It’s a few month since the last update about Yamori but the client has been very busy finalizing many different areas inside and outside the house.

The scaffolding is now taken away from the building so we clearly can see the Douglas columns around the house.

A gutter is made out of zinc and is located in a line between the Douglas structure and the roof to make the roof look visually lighter.

The roof has got a green layer of roofing felt to match the trees behind the house but also to make it visually lighter to look at.

The idea from the beginning was later to attach a surface made out of real plants to the roof, so we have prepared the wood structure of the roof to take the extra weight.

YAMORI

A couple of weeks ago I visited the building site where the house “Yamori” is being built close to Copenhagen.

The house has been designed for a client back in 2021/2022 by where I work most of my time. www.detlevendehus.dk

Yamori is a Japanese name and it is the name of a small lizard that eats the insects that eat the wood in an old wooden house in Japan. The gecko is therefore considered to be a house protector in Japan.

A lot has happened inside and outside the house since it started getting built back in November 2022. You can now sense more and more of how the end result will look like.

The house is still a some months away from being completed and and I’m looking forward to seeing it finished with all its interesting details and materials.

ORIGAMI CHAIR - Hitohira

Some months ago I showed a snapshot from a detail on a chair, that I have been working on for many years.

It all started back when I lived in Japan, where I got the idea to create a chair out of one sheet of material to reduce the amount of components used to make a chair.

The transportation was made easy by the chair being flat and it could be folded into a three dimensional shape, when the chair reached a showroom or the new owner.

Heavily inspired by origami in its design, the chair went through many adjustments and different materials to test if the idea worked.

Many materials has been tested like paper, cardboard and recycled materials but they didn’t work. Either the material wasn’t strong enough or the product ended up being too complicated to manufacture.

With the help from the Japanese designer , the design has now been perfected and the first prototype has been made some months ago, out of a thin plate of steel.

We still need some adjustments to be made to the prototype, before we will make a small production of hand build chairs in steel and brass in 2023.

What will happen afterwards depends on the reaction to the chair and the idea behind it.

Interior design in housing

Architecture and interior design is for me the same thing.
You can't separate them from each other.

Each area can influence each other and create a better overall solution.

There is in Denmark a big focus on the amount of square meters, but not a focus on, if this number actually creates a better use of the house or functions.

Square meters only tells you a two dimensional number, which doesn’t tell you how well your space is used or if there is leftover space.

Interior is defined by three dimensions and not only two.

A low number of square meters doesn’t mean that you have less space, because you often become more creative to use the space better or different, when you are challenged.

Especially interior design in housing is often a afterthought today and has become very standardized.

Rooms has to have a certain size or there has to be a predefined amount of rooms. Then architecture and interior starts to look the same and loose personality.

Architecture and interior design is so much more than this and it makes you miss out on more functional or creative solutions, that will get you to enjoy living in your house more.

In from , the interior is not static. It can be changed over time after your needs through life, because functions and installations can easily be changed.

A new owner can also easily change the interior to their needs, so you are not stuck by taking a “safe” choice for your interior.

This house, will challenge you to think differently and take chances to explore what is possible. The house is alive.

The pictures shows three different interior solutions for the same house.
