We stepped back to the 14th century with conservation expert Ahmed Mansour, exploring the history, architecture, and restoration of the Salar & Sanjar funerary complex. From tracing the site’s urban evolution to revealing the latest conservation interventions and even the archaeological finds uncovered beneath the surface, the session brought centuries of history back to life. ✨This remarkable project is a recent recipient of ARCE’s Antiquities Endowment Fund, under the supervision of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities وزارة السياحة والآثار, helping preserve Cairo’s heritage for generations to come.️

The Full Story of the Restored Door

The Salar and Sanjar Funerary Complex in Cairo has regained a significant part of its original fabric. Here's the remarkable chain of events:

1. The Loss: For years, the original door leaves of the back entrance were missing. Their whereabouts were unknown, creating an incomplete picture of the monument.
2. The Discovery: During the conservation project, our team made a startling discovery. The missing door leaves weren't stolen or destroyed; they had been repurposed as a ceiling for one of the complex's auxiliary rooms. They had suffered damage and were found to be partially burned, adding another layer to their history.
3. The Restoration: After intensive documentation, the conservation team undertook a sensitive restoration process. We consolidated the charred and aged wood to ensure its stability and performed restoration with minimal wood log replacement, preserving as much of the original material as possible.
4. The Homecoming: Finally, after being lost, reused, damaged, and rescued, the door leaves have been reinstalled in their original place at the back entrance.

This is more than just fixing a door; it's an act of historical reconciliation. Returning these elements to their rightful place restores not just the physical structure but also the integrity and authenticity of this Mamluk-era monument.

The back entrance of the complex now stands as it was originally intended, complete with doors that carry the visible scars and stories of their long and unexpected journey. A wonderful achievement for our conservation team.

The project is funded by The American Research Center in Egypt - ARCE - Antiquities Endowment Fund, and under the supervision of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Rehabilitation of Salah al-Dien Citadel
Between January 2023 and July 2024, Mansour for architecture and conservation worked on the Rehabilitation of Salah al-Dien Citadel Project, commissioned by Citadel for Asset Management. The project comprised a detailed photo-documentation of the Citadel, a comprehensive urban study, and architectural and condition survey covering 18 buildings throughout the site. In addition, the team contributed to the development of a masterplan and formulated an intervention strategy aligned with the Citadel's broader vision and the creative industries economy. A key component of the project was the creation of rehabilitation and adaptive reuse proposals for al-Mahka area. Known for hosting the annual music festival and housing administrative buildings, al-Mahka was central to the revitalization effort, with the goal of reinvigorating cultural activities and transforming the Citadel into a dynamic community asset.
إعادة تأهيل قلعة صلاح الدين
بين يناير 2023 ويوليو 2024، عمل مكتب منصور للعمارة والترميم على مشروع إعادة تأهيل قلعة صلاح الدين، بتكليف من شركة القلعة لإدارة الأصول. تضمن المشروع توثيقًا فوتوغرافي مفصلًا للقلعة، ودراسة عمرانية شاملة، ومسحًا معماريًا شمل 18 مبنى في جميع أنحاء الموقع. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، ساهم الفريق في وضع مخطط رئيسي وصياغة استراتيجية تدخل تتماشى مع الرؤية الأوسع للقلعة واقتصاد الصناعات الإبداعية. كان من أهم مكونات المشروع وضع مقترحات لإعادة تأهيل منطقة المحكى وإعادة استخدامها. تشتهر المحكى باستضافة المهرجان الموسيقي السنوي وتضم مباني إدارية، وكانت محورًا أساسيًا في جهود إعادة الإحياء، بهدف إعادة تنشيط الأنشطة الثقافية وتحويل القلعة إلى أصل مجتمعي نابض بالحياة.

Salar and Sanjar’s funerary complex conservation project – phase 2

The conservation project, that started in December 2024, focuses on Cairo's oldest surviving khanqah—a historic Sufi monastery and community mosque that has served as a spiritual and social landmark. Years of neglect and the impact of neighboring demolitions have left the site in an alarming state of conservation. The project's first phase stabilized above-ground remains; currently, the project aims to excavate, document, and structurally repair the khanqah, with special attention to the rear entrance. Key tasks include soil and debris removal, conservation of at-risk areas, and thorough documentation. Through these combined efforts, the project seeks to return the khanqah to active use and secure its place within both the local community and Cairo’s historical landscape.

مشروع ترميم مدرسة وخانقاه سالار وسنجر الجولي - المرحلة الثانية.

يركز المرحلة الثانية من مشروع الترميم، الذي بدأ في ديسمبر 2024، على أقدم خانقاه باقية في القاهرة. استخدم كمسجد حتى ٢٠١٤ وكان بمثابة معلم روحي واجتماعي. وقد أدت سنوات من عدم الصيانة وتأثير عمليات الهدم المجاورة إلى ترك الموقع في حالة حفاظ حرجة. وقد تمت اعمال درء الخطورة والصلب في المرحلة الأولى من المشروع في ٢٠٢٣. ويهدف المشروع حاليًا إلى عمل حفائر في الفناء الخلفي للخانقاه وتوثيقها وتدعيمها انشائيا، مع اهتمام خاص للمدخل الخلفي. وتشمل المهام الرئيسية في هذه المرحلة الى ترميم المدخل الخلفي، تدعيم الممر المؤدي الى الخانقاة، إزالة المخلفات والركام من الفناء، تدعيم المناطق المعرضة للخطر، بالإضافة الى التوثيق الشامل. ومن خلال هذه الجهود المشتركة، يسعى المشروع إلى إعادة الخانقاه إلى الاستخدام الفعلي وترسيخ مكانته في المجتمع المحلي والمشهد التاريخي للقاهرة.
يتم تنفيذ المشروع من قبل مكتب منصور للعمارة والترميم، بتمويل من مركز البحوث الأمريكي، وتحت إشراف وزارة السياحة والآثار المصرية.

وفي الفترة من فبراير ٢٠٢٣ إلى يناير ٢٠٢٤، تم تنفيذ مشروع ترميم مدرسة وجانقاه سالار وسنجر الجاولي - المرحلة الاولى - من قبل مكتب منصور للعمارة والترميم، بتمويل من مركز البحوث الأمريكي، وتحت إشراف وزارة السياحة والآثار المصرية.
