This year’s field trip for the became an unexpected lesson in adaptability.
Originally planned in Tanzania and organized by Cristina Melero González-Barandiarán ( ), the trip had to be completely rethought in just a few days due to the war in the Middle East and the cancellation of flights.
The result? A relocation to Cantabria, in Spain, and an equally powerful learning experience.
Students engaged in hands-on work rebuilding traditional structures, experimenting with local materials, and learning directly from a self-sustaining community. From stone construction and landscape design to understanding self-building practices, the field trip became a real-life exercise in resilience, resourcefulness, and collaboration.
A special thanks to the community of sisters for welcoming us and teaching us so much.
