Multi-sensory technologies transform consumer experiences.

But how realistic should the multi-sensory experiences be? And what does a more integrated digital product experience mean in terms of our affected behavior, privacy, ethics, and our well-being?🤔

This is something to give deep thought to while companies like Facebook and Amazon are already working on products that collect information about our bodies and emotions.

How could you start creating a multi-sensory experience?🤔

One approach could be selecting a keyword that communicates what you want your product to embody.

Then write down all the associations you can think of when thinking about your keyword.✍🏼

Write down absolutely everything. It’s messy, but that’s ok.

Then collect different samples that could evoke what’s related to your keyword.
Try to imagine how your keyword sounds, feels, smells, and looks.

There are six more steps in the framework, but if you start with this step one, you’ll have a good foundation and set a picture of the sensory expressions that relate to your concept.

Why do brands apply sensory strategies to appeal to their customers?

Sensory branding creates or evokes memories.

Sensory branding establishes emotional bonds, and makes the brand more familiar.

Sensory branding affects brand value and the perception of product quality.

Imagine having potato chips in your mouth.🍟
The salty surface that you taste with your tongue.
The crunching between your teeth when eating them.

Did you just moisture your lips?

That’s perfectly fine.

There’s a sonic appeal of chips when eating them.

Noisy food like chips also correlates with freshness.

“Humans love crunchy, noisy snacks. The loud rattling that travels to our inner ear through air and bone conduction helps us identify what it is we’re consuming,” says smell and taste researcher Alan Hirsch.

But you don’t need to touch or smell objects to get the relevant sensory information.

You can also imagine the expected sensory properties of a product like chips based on your previous product experiences🧠

Multi-sensory design provides frameworks and mindsets to create so-called “perceptual reenactments” of real-world sensory experiences that feel real.

Do you get tired easily when you’re at a street with loud music, lots of people, cars, visual effects, and noise all around you?

That’s what is called “sensory overload.” 🤯

When designing sensory experiences, you need to find the right balance in terms of the involvement of each sense in an experience.

Don’t always engage each one of the human senses.

Instead, analyze how a product integrates into the big picture of a person’s lifestyle and habits.

Multi-sensory design is a tool, and like every other tool it needs to adapt to its respective applied environment.

As human-computer interaction evolves to engage more of the human senses, so does multi-sensory design evolve.

Multi-sensory design creates immersive, informative, and enjoyable customer experiences.
