Incubazul: From used shipping containers to a high-tech incubator.
Transforming Cádiz’s obsolete industrial zone into innovation.

Incubazul Base Area: High-Tech Incubator is a pioneering project that reimagines Cádiz’s industrial zone through sustainable architecture and social innovation. Conceived as an energy self-sufficient building, it repurposes shipping containers to create versatile, permeable spaces that foster collaboration, concentration, and community.

The design acts as urban acupuncture, revitalising an obsolete yet strategic area while generating ecological and social synergies. With flexible layouts, natural lighting, and acoustic optimisation, the incubator provides an inspiring environment for entrepreneurs and innovators. More than a workplace, it is a catalyst for shared economy, talent development, and the city’s sustainable transformation.

Located in Puigpunyent, at the heart of Mallorca’s Serra de Tramuntana, 6 Social Housing Ses Veles redefines sustainable architecture through circular design and vernacular wisdom. Built with materials sourced from its own excavation, lime, stone, and local ceramics, the project achieves almost zero energy consumption (1.7 kWh/m²/year) and reduces CO₂ emissions by 50%.

By reviving traditional construction techniques and supporting local trades, it strengthens the island’s economy while promoting environmental regeneration. This is not just housing; it’s a living dialogue between innovation, heritage, and climate responsibility.

𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗯𝘆 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝘆𝗹𝗼𝗿: 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹

We’re pleased to share Learning from the Local—a powerful new book by architect, educator and broadcaster Piers Taylor ()

Published by RIBA Books, it challenges conventional approaches to global architecture and proposes a more grounded, sensitive way of designing — rooted in local identity, sustainable responsibility and real-world experience.

We’re proud to share this project by a long-standing friend and collaborator of SYGD, and we highly recommend the read.

The Apple House by Okra showcases how regenerative principles can redefine sustainable architecture. Constructed almost entirely from bio-based and locally sourced materials, including hempcrete, unfired clay, birch ply and cleft oak, the project merges material innovation with ecological performance.

Hempcrete walls, cast in situ between spruce glulam frames, act simultaneously as structure, insulation, and carbon store. Handcrafted clay floors and lime-plastered surfaces help regulate humidity and temperature, while the exposed timber structure expresses structural honesty and reduces embodied energy.

Developed within the strict planning context of the Metropolitan Green Belt, the project exemplifies how collaborative design and low-impact construction can deliver adaptive, community-focused architecture with lasting environmental value.

Fuinneamh Workshop Architects answer this question with den talamh, an EcoLab nestled in Cork’s Tramore Valley Park. Designed as a meeting point for talks on biodiversity, the building invites visitors to pause, reflect, and connect with the unique landscape of Carroll’s Bog.

The design embraces raw, natural materials: rammed earth walls, timber framing, and a reed-thatched roof provide shelter while harmonising with the surroundings. The compacted earth walls reference the site’s history as a former landfill, transforming a past of waste into a landscape for learning. A hoggin floor and temple-inspired plan create an intimate agora, encouraging dialogue and exploration.

By framing views and fostering contemplation, den talamh turns architecture into a tool for environmental awareness.
