Lundén Architecture Company is excited to attend this year’s Puupäivä to explore the latest in wood innovation. We are dedicated to expanding the possibilities of wood design and construction through creative solutions, experimental processes and expert collaboration.

Our current work includes large-scale wooden projects in educational, hospitality and mixed-use developments, not only in Finland but also in Estonia. This summer, we completed a kindergarten building in Tartu vald, Estonia, marking the first of three planned wooden buildings for the Raadi Education and Community Centre. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful project and share our expertise in both educational environments and wood construction.

Once complete, the Raadi complex will include a kindergarten, school and sports hall. Designed to minimize environmental impact, the buildings feature a modular wooden structure that offers flexibility, reduces material waste, and adapts to evolving functional needs. Indoor learning spaces extend into the surrounding landscape, making it an integral part of the learning experience. The kindergarten building was built using 1300m3 of glulam and cross-laminated timber, and is surrounded by 1250 newly planted trees and shrubs. As a prototype for optimized timber construction, it will inform the development of the school building.

The Raadi kindergarten building has been designed by Lundén Architecture Company together with Estonian company, Arhitekt11. The landscape architecture was developed jointly by Lundén Architecture Company and TajuRuum, and the construction was carried out by KRC Ehitus OÜ.

Lundén Architecture is driving sustainability forward across all companies

Thomas Andersson has joined our team as Chief Sustainability Officer. He will be based at Lundén Architectural Institute (Institute), but his role will span across all companies, supporting them in strengthening their sustainability strategies and practices.

Thomas brings extensive experience in developing systematic and strategic approaches to sustainability within organizational operations. His focus is on finding solutions that deliver the greatest impact, environmentally, socially and commercially.

For the past seven years, Thomas has been leading sustainability initiatives at IKEA in both the procurement organization and in product development. In these roles, he helped integrate sustainability into daily processes and decision-making, empowering the business to develop new practices and a product range aligned with the sustainability ambitions of the company, like circular economy principles and reduced climate impact. Prior to IKEA, Thomas has over a decade of experience in consultancy, specializing in environmental and sustainability management across different industrial sectors.

At Lundén Architecture, we recognize our responsibility in shaping the built environment. We are looking forward to working with Thomas to broaden and deepen our approach to sustainability. Together, we will identify key areas where we can transform how we do business and create meaningful, positive impact in a rapidly changing world.

On Friday, October 17, Tartu vald hosted an opening ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Raadi Kindergarten building. Constructed in under a year, the building and its surrounding yard form the first phase of the Raadi Education and Community Centre, which will eventually include a school, sports hall, and community park.

The building has begun to come to life with its new occupants. It currently serves as a temporary home for Raadi Elementary School, which welcomed its first students in September. The kindergarten is set to open next autumn. Designed to evolve with its users, the rational timber structure, adaptable interiors and dynamic landscape provide a supportive environment for learning and play.

Raadi Kindergarten has been designed by Lundén Architecture Company together with Estonian company, Arhitekt11. The design is based on their winning proposal in the 2022 international architecture competition. The landscape architecture was developed jointly by Lundén Architecture Company and TajuRuum, and the construction was carried out by KRC Ehitus OÜ.

Our proposal, “Astudes Üheskoos Edasi” (“Stepping Up Together”) has been awarded second prize in Martsa School Competition for a new elementary school in Katleri, Tallinn.

Our entry proposes a new public anchor for the evolving Lasnamäe district: an inspiring indoor and outdoor learning environment and vibrant year-round community hub. Rooted in its context and driven by inclusive, forward-thinking design, the school aims to foster growth within the community, inspiring everyone to step up together.

The design considers the full life cycle of both the building and its outdoor spaces. It integrates modular concrete and a wood grid for flexibility, retains and enriches the existing landscape with climate-resilient vegetation, and repurposes demolition and excavation materials to minimize waste.

The proposal was developed by Lundén Architecture in collaboration with Tallinn-based office,Arhitekt11. The two offices recently completed the construction of Raadi Daycare, the first building in their winning design for the Raadi Educational and Community Centre. They are currently realizing a new high school in Tõnismägi, in the heart of Tallinn. City Of Tallinn

The Kupittaa Core infrastructure project, a key element in the development of Turku Science Park, is moving towards implementation

On September 22, 2025, the Turku City Council approved the Kupittaa Core infrastructure project plan, the first phase of the local detailed plan, and the preliminary agreement for the real estate transaction. Construction is expected to begin in early 2026.

The infrastructure project is a key part of both the Kupittaa Core project and the broader Turku Science Park development. Kupittaa Core is envisioned as a dynamic and functional centre that bridges the districts of Itäharju and Kupittaa. The area will integrate education, public services, housing, workspaces, and flexible facilities for businesses, forming a high-quality urban environment supported by a solid economic base. The development and construction of the area will be realized in phases. The initial phase will consist of the infrastructure project together with the Turku Vocational Institute’s Taito Campus, which will anchor the transformation of the area.

The Kupittaa Core infrastructure project includes a deck across Helsinginkatu and the railway, a parking facility with approximately 650 spaces, and a mobility hub serving as a key transport node. The realignment of Helsinginkatu and its transformation into a boulevard will contribute to a more dynamic and appealing urban district.

The alliance consortium involved in the Kupittaa Core Infrastructure project consists of YIT Suomi, Lundén Architecture and Renell Käppi Arkkitehdit.

We are expanding our scope with a new focus on structural engineering

Bauhow Architectural Engineering is a newly founded company focused on the art of architectural engineering. Led by our long-time collaborator, Matti Pirinen, Bauhow is a team of structural engineers specializing in tackling structural challenges to bring ambitious architectural ideas to life.

Bauhow is an independent company associated with Lundén Architecture Company, united by a shared passion for seeking innovative solutions for demanding structures. With strong expertise and a fascination for the beauty in structure, Bauhow brings a unique perspective to structural engineering.

Our longstanding collaboration with Matti Pirinen began in 2012 with the exploration, development and construction of an innovative wooden structure. Since then, we have worked together on a range of projects that expand the boundaries of wood construction. Over the past decade, Matti and the Bauhow team have broadened their experience through a range of demanding structures, strengthening their expertise in tall structures, wide spans, public buildings as well as advanced timber applications.

Building on our shared knowledge, we are excited to further develop and realize new possibilities in architectural structures.

Our Kirstinpuisto block in Turku gets a new addition

Amori, the third building in the new block has been granted a building permit. With its white facades and rhythmically arranged windows it forms a connection with the functionalist architecture of the old soap factory. The new buildings in the block are unified by ground-floor facades of umbra concrete, giving the area a cohesive and distinctive appearance.

Amori offers a wide range of apartments from studios to family apartments and loft apartments with high ceilings. There are communal spaces for shared use in the ground floor and in the attic, including saunas and club rooms, as well as a generous green yard.

Amori is realized by Lundén Architecture Company for Avainasunnot.
