We recently had the pleasure of having a hands-on clay workshop at our office, led by architects Johanna Hyrkäs and Oona Ryhänen . Johanna conducts research on raw earth construction at Aalto University. The workshop explored the potential of this pure and elementary material, with a particular focus on industrial applications.
We got more familiar with clay-based building materials such as lightweight clay and their wide range of uses mixed with organic binders. Beyond its low-carbon footprint, clay helps regulate indoor humidity, improving both comfort and air quality. It even acts as a natural fire-resistant material.
During the workshop, we crafted and polished the incredibly satisfying Dorodango balls, and learned a contemporary take on this traditional Japanese technique. Turns out that getting your hands dirty and shaping clay into shiny spheres is actually so meditative and rewarding! They even smell amazing, a bit like frankincense. We highly recommended trying this, especially as a pause in the middle of a working day, as we did.
It really did feel like our connection to mother Earth grew deeper and more meaningful in those couple of hours. A big, big thank you to Johanna and Oona for an inspiring and insightful workshop!
