We recently had the pleasure of having a hands-on clay workshop at our office, led by architects Johanna Hyrkäs and Oona Ryhänen . Johanna conducts research on raw earth construction at Aalto University. The workshop explored the potential of this pure and elementary material, with a particular focus on industrial applications.

We got more familiar with clay-based building materials such as lightweight clay and their wide range of uses mixed with organic binders. Beyond its low-carbon footprint, clay helps regulate indoor humidity, improving both comfort and air quality. It even acts as a natural fire-resistant material.

During the workshop, we crafted and polished the incredibly satisfying Dorodango balls, and learned a contemporary take on this traditional Japanese technique. Turns out that getting your hands dirty and shaping clay into shiny spheres is actually so meditative and rewarding! They even smell amazing, a bit like frankincense. We highly recommended trying this, especially as a pause in the middle of a working day, as we did.

It really did feel like our connection to mother Earth grew deeper and more meaningful in those couple of hours. A big, big thank you to Johanna and Oona for an inspiring and insightful workshop!

Meet our three new lovely and talented colleagues , .arch and .

Olivia graduated from Tampere University, specialising in nature-based building materials and the management of built heritage. Her Master’s thesis focused on sustainable urban housing using low-carbon materials like straw, clay and timber, and is a finalist for the national Wuorio Prize. She is interested in ecological construction and social sustainability, and has a particularly soft spot for old buildings and vintage fashion.

Sofia graduated from Aalto University with honours, majoring in building design. Her Master's thesis, Psychologically Accessible Safehouses for Suicidal People, received two awards and a nomination for the national Wuorio Prize. She is interested in holistic sustainability and environMental well-being, combining design and research approaches.

Filip is a double-Master’s prodigy, having graduated from both UAUIM Bucharest and Tampere University magna cm laude. He was awarded a distinctive proposal Aallonharja for sustainable island trekking within the Finnish archipelago at Europan17. He is fascinated by sauna culture and wishes to one day have his own self-built ecological mikromökki.

In the design process, we have considered, among other things, a school located in the village centre, reassessed routes, streets, and ecological connections, and ensured that new solutions fit with existing properties. The amount of construction has been reduced, and principles for how the blocks blend into the landscape have been developed (pictured). Next, detailed local master plans will be prepared for different parts of the area. subsequent planning together with and WSP’s traffic planning team (some of whom are now in Liikennesuunnittelu Kutoset. was in the competition team.

It is inspiring to see how many themes from Vantaa’s resource-wise roadmap and the area’s development vision—preceding the idea competition—have carried through from the competition ideas to the subsequent planning, such as the climate-wise assessment. There are also plans to support keeping and caring for animals 🐑🐑🐑!

Huili — our proposal for Tampere’s new Härmälä residential and camping area — has been awarded a shared prize! 🏡

The jury highlighted that “the buildings’ character shows a clear and distinctive villa-inspired expression.”

The block layout takes cues from Härmälä’s traditional urban fabric and the elegant Lepola villa. The buildings gently step down toward the lakefront, with varied structures and frame depths creating a flexible mix of apartment types and adaptable spaces.

Designed in collaboration with Nomaji maisema-arkkitehdit Oy , who led the competition preparation. Traffic expertise from Juho Kero and Aleksi Kankaanpää, and tourism insights from Petra Niskanen (WSP Finland).

Our proposal Huili has won a shared prize in the idea competition for Tampere’s new Härmälä residential and camping area!

The jury praised the proposal for its comprehensive take on sustainability.
Rooted in the landscape, Huili’s design strengthens Härmälä’s green connections and recreational networks — enhancing the area’s natural character. Shared use between housing and the camping area, along with seasonal flexibility, helps make space and resources more efficient.

This week, a group of Swedish and Finnish journalism students are taking part in a course on architecture journalism at the Hanaholmen Cultural Centre in Helsinki. Earlier in the week, Miia-Liina gave a talk on the architecture of the future — and today, we had the pleasure of welcoming the young journalists to our office.

Sofia Herrlin, Edwin Nyberg, and Linnéa Nöbbelin are exploring why we build differently today compared to past decades and centuries — and why so many buildings are being demolished.

We had an inspiring conversation about industrial production systems and the architect’s role in today’s construction culture, which often resembles an assembly line of pre-existing products rather than the creation of something truly unique.

Will circular design shift this paradigm? Perhaps — especially when dismantled building components become standardised for reuse and reassembly. Some way to go before we are there, but we can already see signs of the change!

It's time for Europan18 - the architecture competition aimed at young architects. This year, Miia-Liina Tommila has the honour of chairing the Jury in Finland. Check out Europan Finland for details on the competition!

If you are under 40 on 29th June - check out the two very interesting sites in Lahden kaupunki and Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku! Submit your winning proposal and secure the chance for a follow-up commission in detailed planning and/or landscape design (this applies to both of our sites in Finland👌🏼). In lahti, the City is ready to commission follow-up work, including the overall plan and/or its first implementation steps, aiming for realisation by 2029 World Champion winter games.

Europan is more than a competition: it's a unique arena and a platform for meeting and engaging in architecture and planning, and a very European project in it's core, promoting dialogue. It can open up possibilities for learning, developing, understanding - and questioning.
