The Legacy of the Land of the Fanns

We should all recognise that Land of the Fanns has been a huge success and will positively change the way we work together across our landscape. I am sure all partners and stakeholders will agree that we need to grasp this opportunity and work closely to sustain the energy and momentum gained by the team in the past five years. The good news is that, through the Thames Chase Trust and its agreed role as the Legacy Body, we have a tried and tested mechanism in place to achieve this.

The Trust will build on its 32 years’ experience of working in partnership across the Community Forest landscape to continue the good work of the Land of the Fanns team. It is a bright and exciting future ahead for our landscape now with more partners engaged, more people connected to their landscape and a greater understanding and appreciation of culture and heritage.

A new Community Forest Partnership Board has been created to drive forward the legacy of Land of the Fanns and to oversee the creation of a refreshed Thames Chase Plan, forging an ambitious strategic vision and taking us into the next ten years of robust partnership working across our landscape.

Our second legacy film, Land and Water, celebrates the projects aiming to restore and reconnect the natural landscape.

Changing peoples relationships to rivers and reconnecting rivers with their natural flood plains to restoring areas for conservation grazing and habitat management. This short film highlights just a few of the completed projects and partnerships of our five year scheme.

Essex Gardens Trust successfully bid for funding from the Land of the Fanns Landscape Partnership Scheme to research sites of historic and local interest in Thurrock. The culmination of this is an inventory of these sites, useful to Thurrock planning authorities when making decisions which may affect the sites described, or their setting. The inventory has uncovered some fascinating stories and the current pandemic has given us a strong recognition of the pleasure and the healing power, both physical and mental, of open spaces and their importance in today’s society.

As the five years of the programme completes, Fens, Forests and Fields is a fitting legacy for the people, places and commitment to the area of the Scheme. It captures the spirit of the place at a pivotal moment as the climate emergency and the aftermath of the pandemic force reflections on the past and a need to write a different future.

Copies of Fens, Forests and Fields can be obtained for a suggested donation of £10 per book. There are two different ways of ordering your copy:

1. In person from the Thames Chase Forest Centre, Upminster
2. Copies can be posted for an additional £4 each by donating via justgiving (suggested £14 in total).
