Proposal by .id - Transparent material (polycarbonate sheets are used because they are more environmentally friendly than glass) is used as the main alternative roof cover to show where the condition of a charred original roof is completely replaced by new material. Red is the main color of the roof as a remembrance of the huge fire once occurred to this church, so the terrific incident of this church will always be kept in people’s mind and becomes a living building with its stories.

The red roof illuminates the inner space which gives the meaning that church must be brave in calling goodness to help others. The main structure of the roof uses black steel material. The color is used as a symbol of the old roof structure which charred during a fire. The shape of church tower is minimized and coated with gold as tower sheath. The golden tower shows hopes and dreams. The cross symbol shows the struggle of life to always be close to God. The value to be conveyed is that after a bad thing (fire), there will always be a determination to achieve good things to continue moving forward. In the interior, the "rib vault" structure is preserved but the cover is replaced with arc wire mesh following the old structure. This concept is applied so that the shape of the construction remains visible but vague because of the perforated wire mesh material. The concept is to recall the blurred memories of this church incident. @ Paris, France

«The best way to preserve a building is to find a use for it»

Viollet-le-duc

Thinking about the restoration of the Cathedral of Notre Dame when it suffered irreparable damage implies a design process, and designing is solving problems. Why not think about the tragedy caused by fire as an opportunity to revitalize Notre Dame? This question led me to understand restoration as a functional space: a terrace, expansion of the cathedral, completely flexible that calls for introspection, meeting, recreation. The limits are given by nature, from the ashes life is born.

| Divine Intervention |

As a response to Notre-Dame’s tragic fire, ‘Divine intervention’ stands as an inflatable balloon-like protective layer which would sit on top of the gothic monument. The balloon would take to the sky at night and only come down during the day. It also intends to be a temporary prosthetic solution, and is to be removed once a winning design is chosen.

As Notre-Dame sits within its conservative context, any permanent addition would require sensitive evaluation, a process which may require years.

As such, the balloon intends to allow architects and designers to reflect, imagine, and explore within the ‘volume’ of the bubble sitting on top of the prestigious cathedral.

Proposal by:
Holy Ghost.

The Proposal seeks to create an atmosphere, using the ethereal to replace the matter. The light was the key element, bringing inspiration from the art installation “Arcades” created by the design studio Troika, adapting it to raise a gothic structure entirely made of light, using fresnel lenses to bend the light rays into ogival arches.
The place where once the pinnacle stood, was left open, replacing it with a lightweight graphene pole, held in place by cables, crowned with the cross, (at the same height of the old one) on top, which is lit to look like it’s floating over the parisian night sky.
Gothic cathedrals are known to be beautifully made to play with light and shadow, and to create sensations of the contact with the grace of God. That was the main reason, why the skylight created by the void in the roof, brings controlled sunlight into the interior spaces of the church, representing a new approach to the original proposal.
The nature of that Project transcends the idea of an architectural intervention, assuming the face of an art installation, with the lowest level of intervention as possible in the original structure and giving to the parisian people the possibility of disassembling it in a future to come, replacing it for a new one, that brings the carachteristics of It’s time, filling the people with new emotions and sensations and turning Notre Dame Cathedral into a way for the city to express Itself as a living organism. @ Paris, France

MAD Architects proposal for Notre-Dame de Paris. French culture has influenced a lot of different cultures and took them under its wings. The colors of the french flag "tricolore" are mixed to refer to the unity of this cultures and the resulting color is used as a base on the arches. The canopy has pink-hued iridescent vinyl tent placed on arches which are fixed but still allowing the movement of the tent. Moving with the wind, the spectrum of colors create a harmony representing the whole nation and the heartbreaking fire that happened short time ago.
