Busy week out in the sunshine! Keeping the Manche (50) secure and tidy!
I’ve just finished up jobs near Sainte-Mère-Église and Nehou involving some essential perimeter maintenance:

✅ Fence Repairs: Re-tensioned and repaired wire fencing to keep the boundaries secure.
✅ Hedging: Hedge trimming to get the garden back in shape.

A single blueberry bush flowers beautifully every spring and delivers almost nothing. That's not a sick plant. It's a lonely one.

Most blueberry varieties need a different variety nearby for cross-pollination to set a full crop. One bush alone means plenty of blooms and very little fruit.

Propagation fixes that faster than buying new plants. One mature bush in late February holds enough dormant wood for eight to ten new plants. The cuttings carry the same genetics, but planting multiples in slightly different spots creates enough variation in bloom timing that bees move pollen between them effectively.

🫐 How to do it:

- Select firm straight stems from last season's growth — reddish-brown wood, pencil thickness, with visible buds along the length. Avoid thick old wood at the base and thin green tips at the top

- Cut five to six inch sections with four to five buds each. Bottom cut at forty-five degrees just below a bud. Top cut flat just above a bud. Blueberry buds are small and round — easy to miss if you rush

- Strip any remaining leaf tissue from the lower half. Score the bottom inch of bark lightly on two sides with a knife to expose the cambium. Dip in rooting hormone and tap off excess — blueberries are slower to callus than most shrubs so the hormone makes a real difference

- Push cuttings into moist peat-perlite mix with two-thirds buried. Standard potting soil is too alkaline — blueberries won't root in it. The acidity of peat creates the environment their roots expect

- Cover with a clear bag or cut bottle. Place in bright indirect light and keep the mix consistently moist but not waterlogged. Check moisture every two to three days

- Roots take eight to twelve weeks. The buds will swell and push small leaves before roots are fully developed — resist the urge to transplant early. Tug gently at week ten and wait for firm resistance. Grow on in pots through the first summer and plant out in fall

One bush that flowers with nothing to show for it becomes a full row that actually feeds you 🌿

Weekly Project Round-Up: Néhou 50390 🛠️🌲

We’ve had a productive week out in the fresh air here in Néhou, getting these outdoor jobs crossed off the list:

Fencing: Replaced broken panels and reinforced posts to get the perimeter sturdy and secure again. 🔨

Tree Work: Safely cleared some "hung-up" conifers that had snagged in nearby hazel trees—a tricky job, but the site is much safer now! 🪚
