Project update: Planning permission has been submitted for a self-build dwellinghouse and garage on an established rural site in Whitecairns, Aberdeenshire.

The proposed design draws inspiration from traditional rural vernacular architecture, featuring a simple T-shaped 1.5-storey form with secondary lean-to extensions. This approach provides our clients with a cost-effective, efficient construction while creating a modern, open-plan layout perfectly suited to contemporary living.

A carefully considered material palette of vertical timber cladding, natural slate, and red corrugated roofingensures the dwelling sits comfortably within its rural landscape, celebrating both heritage and modern simplicity.

As we wrap up 2025, we’re excited to share a milestone that’s been a real highlight of the year — MAC Architects is now based in Cults, Aberdeen.

Our new studio is located in the historic Post Room, dating back to the early 1900s and carefully reimagined into a bright, modern workspace that reflects how we work today. Swipe to see the transformation from its historic roots to our new creative home.

Planning Approval Secured | Lennoxbrae, Fochabers, Moray

We’re delighted to announce that planning permission has been secured for our client’s ancillary garden room, located on our self-build site in Fochabers, Moray — where we previously designed a bespoke, black timber-clad monolithic dwellinghouse.

Set on a sloping site overlooking the River Spey, the new garden room is designed to take full advantage of its surroundings.

A full glass gable opens the space to panoramic countryside views, creating a seamless connection between the interior and landscape.

To the rear, a garage and workshop are neatly integrated into the form, continuing the project’s minimalist design language and maintaining a subtle, respectful presence on the site.

This addition reflects our continued commitment to considered design, contextual response, and craftsmanship rooted in place.

We’re delighted to announce that planning approval has been granted for dwelling alterations and a proposed double garage to a beautiful detached granite villa located within the conservation area of Ballater, Aberdeenshire.

The design approach was carefully developed to respect the character and setting of the original dwelling, ensuring that the new garage sits harmoniously alongside the existing house.

With its low-pitched corrugated roof and eaves positioned below those of the main dwelling, the garage subtly complements the villa without overpowering it — maintaining views, light, and balance across the site.

Natural materials play a key role in the proposal. The combination of vertical and horizontal natural timber cladding to the garage echoes rural design traditions and creates a visual connection to the existing granite dwellinghouse.

Externally, the dwelling will be enhanced with Nordan Alu-Clad timber windows and doors, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern performance.

This ensures the home meets the high-quality standards expected within the conservation area while providing energy efficiency and durability for the challenging Royal Deeside winters.
