Glass blocks are not outdated. Milan Design Week proved that.

One of the world’s biggest design events featured glass blocks heavily this year, but in a much softer and more modern way than people remember from the 80s.

And honestly, I absolutely love them.

Glass blocks work beautifully in:
• bathrooms
• hallways
• staircases
• home offices
• feature walls

Why they work so well:
• privacy without blocking natural light
• softer daylight in darker Scottish homes
• architectural texture and depth
• durable and timeless
• spaces feel separated without feeling smaller

The modern versions feel warmer, softer and far more luxurious.

Look around the room you are in right now.

How does it make you feel?
Focused? Comfortable? Energised? Or tired, flat and disconnected?

Colour and light influence how we experience a space far more than people realise, yet so many homes and offices still rely heavily on white and grey because they feel “safe”.

I disagree.

When overused, these spaces can start feeling cold, impersonal and emotionally flat, especially during darker Scottish months. Colour does not need to be loud to change how a room feels. Even softer, earthy tones, muted greens or warmer neutrals can completely change the atmosphere of a space.

As the only interior designer in Aberdeen specialising in colour psychology, colour choices are always based around the people living or working there.

Retail design is far more strategic.

A few weeks ago, I attended a Women in Property Scotland networking event and site visit to the refurbished Marks and Spencer at Union Square Aberdeen. Loved meeting more women across property, construction and design, while also seeing behind the scenes of such a large commercial project.

Customer flow, lighting, layouts, internal and external materials are all designed intentionally to shape how people move through the space and experience the store.

A very interesting evening and great to connect with more ladies in the industry.

A very personal home is coming together.

Every detail in this project was chosen around the family and their lifestyle. The colours, layered lighting, antique gold details and timeless pieces all had to work beautifully, while also being practical for life with 2 dogs. The fabrics are super durable.

The project included:
• full room design
• realistic 3D visuals
• colour selection
• layered lighting design
• clickable shopping list for all furniture, lighting and accessories
• guidance throughout the whole process

Yellow brings energy into a space, which makes it a good choice for kitchens.

It also reflects light, helping to brighten darker rooms.

The important part is balance. Used on cabinetry and combined with neutral tones and warm materials, it adds colour without taking over the space.
