The menagerie are doing well, enjoying the cooler weather, sunshine and showers this week.
Hot damp weather is the prompt to shear the sheep and we'll be on it this weekend. The Geese just trundle along, doing what they do.

These guys are all part of the circular approach but at the moment it's the shelter from the trees that is really shining it, during the hot weather and the rain.

A little tree nursery update from us
It's been a bit quiet as my phone died and I took the opportunity of a break whilst transferring onto a new phone! Back now but probably still intermittent whilst getting on top of the growing season..
The Sweet Chestnut are fabulous but the Mulberries still need work...

What a weird weekend πŸ™ˆπŸ€£πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
It's been glorious and it's snowed...
We've had animal chaos and happy sunbathing beasties
We've got a ton of prep done for the tree nursery, but I could do with a few days off before Monday πŸ™ˆ
I'm going to put it down to a mad March and keep smiling. At least it's all meant to be a bit nuts this month right?!
Hope you had a good weekend (and a less chaotic one)

Mulberry seedlings 🌱 β™₯
Our air prune beds were far more successful than the polytunnel trials, which suits the 'lose the plastic' approach we want to be honest, but I was prepared for a greenhouse in case the extra warmth was beneficial.
Slugs and wees just out did the seedlings in the ground despite the extra warmth. However, even after just 10months the rots were pretty impressive.
I had to lift these out of the germinating bed, so they've gone out to the field beds and 🀞🀞 we'll see how they do.
The seedlings in the air prune bed will tested out as well, but I'll leave half a bed undisturbed despite being very densely sown and again, we'll see how they go...

Working on our tree nursery field beds.
This is really stage 2 as the germinating / propagation stage is in the air beds - to be explored later in the spring when we're sowing seed again. But this is how the calendar year works, the mulch on these beds (already well rotted down wood chip) needs a bit longer to sink in before we're sowing. Although fingers crossed the saplings will be in in the next couple of weeks.
No plastic so HARD WORK but hopefully worth it πŸ™
Multiple layers going down to build these up slowly.

Peeling chestnut posts seems like a weird extra step when you're getting all your foundation fences up and it's a lot to do..
But it's not because peeled posts are pretty (they are, but I love bark on just as much)
It's putting a little hope in the extra work now getting us an extra year later.
Sweet Chestnut bark hosts a wonderful selection of little critters, and we don't want them eating their way out of our posts!

Kane's full-time job is as a rather excellent mobile mechanic. He works locally from his van and that means he's spent the most awful winter on a variety of hard surfaces (or small rivers) underneath cars in all weathers.
Hay is all on the balcony of our neighours barn, which is a bit high for me to reach, so despite it meaning starting the day with cold feet that's first job of the morning...
Honestly β€β€β€πŸ™
Waters done, birds are fed, sheep are happy, both off to work now.. even tiny farms are hard... but incredibly satisfying. And it only works because we're a team ❀

Extremely pleased with the roots on our seedling Hazel and Mulberry from the test beds 🌳😍🌳
These are only 9 months old but already of a size with some of the whips I've bought in for planting this year.

We'll plant a few out to see how they do when planted out this early. The rest will be split between the air beds and fields beds and grown on for next season..

So with that in mind I think this is the first post where I've officially been brave enough to say we have a tree nursery 😱🌳🌳🌳❀️😁

We'll be focusing on agroforestry, forest garden and edible plants, primarily trees but also some understory (bilberry seeds are stratifying as we speak)... If you're interested please follow, or even more, drop us some feedback on our website.
This is going to be a slow grow so early thoughts are all gratefully received πŸ™πŸ™πŸ‘

January mornings feel pretty dark at the moment if you're inside looking out.
Morning chores (and wooden walls 😁) mean we get to here the birds, who just started really singing again last week.
Brighter days on the horizon, but it makes it easier to love these dark misty mornings
Have a lovely day

Exciting morning delivery!
Thank you to I'm super happy
(Fyi for advert spotters they have no idea who I am I'm just genuinely happy about my plants...)
And I should note that RM deliver regularly to our little community, this was just the first 'to the door' and contracts with other delivery services who shall remain nameless, who have left a variety of items in random locations near 1km away in various storms 😭
Anyway, happy place, new plants!
I'll explain the thinking behind each when they go in the ground.
Hope you have a lovely day 😊
