Why winter is the best time for hard pruning & garden tidy-ups ❄️

Trees like cherry are dormant just now — sap is down, no growth, no stress. That makes winter the safest time to take them right back and reshape them properly.

No nesting birds, no active wildlife, and beds are clear, so hedge cutting and border tidy-ups can be done without disturbance.

A good winter cut means stronger, healthier growth in spring 🌱

Getting your garden ready for winter – a few practical tips 🌿

With the colder weather setting in, this is a good time to get the garden in order.
Here are a few things worth doing before the frost arrives:

Prune hedges and trees – keeps them in shape and helps prevent wind damage.

Cut back shrubs and tidy herbaceous borders – clear away dead perennials so they come back stronger in spring.

Give the lawn one last cut – not too short, just enough to keep it tidy through winter.

Edge borders and remove weeds while the soil’s still soft.

Clear leaves from lawns and paths to stop them getting slippery or mossy.

Add mulch around plants to help protect roots from frost.

Check gutters and drains – standing water can do more harm than you’d think.

Clean and store tools somewhere dry so they’re ready to go next season.
