You should by now be seeing carpets of these beautiful bells in nearby woodlands across the UK. The delicate violet-blue flowers transform our landscape every spring and truly announce the season.

As a firm favourite with the pollinators, bluebells are a great addition to any wildlife garden, but there are a few things to be mindful of when growing them in your space. Every part of this beautiful flower is toxic, with even the sap being an irritant to our skin. Highly toxic to dogs and cats, you’ll need to be careful about them in their vicinity. Bluebells are also good seed spreaders and can grow up through other plants, so management of them to avoid a beautiful takeover can be necessary.

In folklore, bluebells are often seen as a symbol of honesty - it was said that if a person was to wear them, they would be compelled to tell only the truth!

Gardeners across the UK are being warned about a newly identified species of slug that is completely invisible to the naked eye. Experts say the only way to detect them is by listening very carefully at dawn or dusk for the tiiiiiny squeaking noise they make when feeding on plants. Photo of pest attached…

To protect your garden:
- Go outside very early or very late
- Stay completely still (breath holding optional)
- Listen closely for tiny squeaks near plants

If you hear anything, you’ll need to move out immediately 😬 Or you can check today’s date and breathe out again…😂

I know what you’re thinking - aaaargh, snails in my garden! But this wee beastie is actually quite important 💪🏻 Yes, they’re heavily responsible for munching through young plants and leaving the landscape looking more than a little ragged, but hear me out…

Snails are superb at breaking down decaying vegetation in the garden, recycling nutrients back into the soil. Not only are they an inexpensive ‘clean up crew’, they’re a vital part of the food chain, providing a source of nutrition to birds, hedgehogs, frogs and more.

If you need to remove a few of these trail blazers 😏 simply head out at dusk to hand pick, rather than using toxins. You can also try some barrier methods around plants, such as copper tape or crushed eggshells. Or maybe even give them a few sacrificial plants to focus on - they love a yummy marigold 😋

The best kind of garden is one in balance with nature, so here’s to learning how to live alongside each other where we can! 💚

It’s me, Goose - fastest Labrador in the west, 2026 BAFTA winner 🐕

I’ve decided I’m going to be a palaeontologist. It helps that Dad’s always digging, as half my work’s already done then and I can just nip in at the end and take the glory.

I found these bones the other day which were 100% a brand new dinosaur. I took them back to the van and Dad said I couldn’t take them home, yet he’s allowed to take plants and chickens and puddings back with him - go figure.

Next week I think I’ll pop some of my finds under the front seat of the van for keepsies. Last time I did that, he looked for ‘that funny smell’ for AGES…
