Ynys Gifftan Island Project :- Ynys Gifftan is an 18-acre tidal island in the Dwyryd Estuary near Portmeirion, Gwynedd. The island was granted to the Harlech family in the early 18th century by Queen Anne — hence its name, “Anne’s Gift”.

A Victorian farmhouse sits on the eastern shoreline, facing Talsarnau. Lived in until the 1970s, it now stands in need of substantial repair and careful consideration. Its coastal exposure, tidal access and decades of vacancy present both opportunity and complexity. The island lies within the planning jurisdiction of Eryri National Park. Any future proposals must respond to landscape sensitivity, environmental designations, infrastructure feasibility and long-term sustainability. Projects in such locations demand early strategic thinking before formal applications are prepared.

Dyfi Architecture previously undertook detailed feasibility work in relation to the island, exploring planning context, condition, constraints and potential development options. Work of this nature typically brings together highly detailed survey, fabric assessment and policy analysis to establish a realistic understanding of risk and viability.

Access to Ynys Gifftan is by wading across the estuary at low tide — a reminder that this is a place shaped as much by environment and history as by architecture.

This house dates from 1560 and was built for descendants of Llywelyn Fawr, the first Prince of Wales. Oliver Cromwell is said to have stayed during the Civil War when it was the Parliamentarians base for their siege of Harlech Castle. It is without doubt one of the oldest inhabited houses in Wales.

It has featured on TV's 'Most Haunted Series' and is widely held to be the most haunted house in North Wales!

The new owners commissioned Dyfi Architecture to carry out a full and detailed survey of the property and grounds and to follow up with further advice and Architectural input.

This is a truly remarkable house that is steeped in history and even has a specially preserved narrow gauge railway station in it's grounds named after the Colonel who lived there for many years.

Dyfi Architecture have won another award.!

We are Lead Consultants on a seven year project to totally renovate and upgrade this Grade 2* Welsh Manor House dating from 1616 along with a number of other very significant buildings on the Glyn Estate in Harlech, North Wales.

Lord Harlech said :- 'Considering the complexity and scale of the restoration, including navigating the listed building consent, planning, and ecological considerations, the project was daunting, to say the least. We needed to find an architectural firm who understood our vision for the project, has experience working with conservation principles, and how to work with the principles of sympathetic restoration within the guidelines of Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri/Snowdonia National Park. From our initial meeting, right the way through the six-and-a-half-year restoration, Dyfi Architecture provided invaluable guidance and expertise to see the project through to completion. It is no understatement to say that we could not have done this without them.'_
