Hello everyone.
This is a job I've done not so long ago in the Barrow area of Clitheroe. Customer having issues with the front door π¬
On arrival I noticed a few issues straight away, the door was hitting the casing on the lock side, the client had to physically run at the door to get it in! π± Also it was very difficult to open, the latch wasn't retracting fully, and there was a sticking point with the euro lock, lots of play in the central receiver as well.
So as usual we had a coffee π Put the world to rights π€£π€ͺ And got on with the job π
So first I removed the euro lock, and yes it had a few sticking points on the cylinder cam, I tried a bit of specialist oil to see if it had seized up first, but it had a fault unfortunately, the pins can wear down due to usage, I think it was a spring below the pins that had seized and broken possibly. So I fitted a new lock to avoid any issues moving forward ππ
Then I removed the handle set, which looked okay, just a bit of oil needed in the spring blocks as seized slightly, all good π
Time for the mechanism to come out. Once removed I discovered it had a broken part which had lodged itself above the springs at the back of the gearbox, hence why the latch wouldn't retract when pulling the handle down. Whenever this happens, it's always a 50/50 chance if I can simply remove the broken part, and the gearbox will work fine, or it won't, it all depends on what and where it has broken free from. There is a cam that goes around the spindle bar, this is normally the main culprit 90% of the time.
In this case, it was a new gearbox that would be required. So I fitted one of my overnight locks, so the door could be secured till I returned.
As mentioned the door was not closing properly, I could see that the hinges weren't meeting the casing flush. So I removed the door, and discovered that the hinges had been poorly fitted to the casing, not a suprise on these new builds! π€ͺ These are butt hinges, so there are no adjustments you can make to adjust the door as with a standard uPVC/Rock door. As you can see in the pictures it's crazy how people think this kinda work is passable! π€¬ So I got my chisels out, and cut the hinges into the frame a bit more professionally π And would you believe it, it closes perfectly now, with a nice even gap around the door ππ
The central receiver had an issue as well, the faceplate wasn't holding, so when closing the door it had a bit of movement. This is not good as the door needs to be held by the latch primarily, so when lifting the handle up, the hooks and/or cams will locate their receivers without being forced. This is why a lot of doors experience problems. So I fitted a self-tapping screw to avoid this happening again π
Once returned I fitted the repaired mechanism, cut some split gasket from the cill as loose, adjusted all the receivers, and we now have a perfectly work door πππ
Another happy customer πππ
