One of the things I like about making spoons is their memory. These came from a fallen beech tree in a local park that I went to pretty much every day with our dog Hazel. I like to imagine the tree 5, 10, 50 years ago, these little spoons nestled within the branches somewhere.

These were the last spoons I carved from my previous wood stock, I'm actually about to get on a plane to a new life in the US! Whenever I get my shop up and running again, I don't think I'll be listing these, they will be a good reminder of our time in the UK!

Hey everyone, sorry I haven't been as active on Instagram recently. However, I've got some big news: my family and I are moving from the UK to Atlanta, Georgia! It's been a crazy few months trying to deal with all the logistics of moving overseas, while at the same time processing some pretty intense emotions about leaving a place where we've been for so long. The house we're in now is the place where I've lived consistently for the longest in my entire life. Some amazing things have happened in the last 10+ years here, and some pretty tragic things as well, and because of that, I feel like Liverpool has taken care of me in some of the most trying times of my life. My kids haven't known anything else, so even though I wasn't born here myself, I feel like I've put down roots in this place.

I took my wife and the two girls to the airport this morning and set them on their way to the new chapter in their lives. I am now back at our house for the next week by myself to wrap up the final pieces of moving our family across the ocean. I'll be sending our pets in the middle of the week, and the movers are coming to take just a few of the things from the house to ship on a boat. I walked back into the house after dropping them off at the airport and I was flooded with some very intense sadness that I hadn't felt up until this point. I think I've been focused on the tasks at hand, but now that the house is empty, it's really hit home that we are leaving this place where we've built so many memories: the birth of my youngest daughter in our kitchen, the disco parties in our loft bedroom, the quiet times sipping coffee and looking out at Wales from our bedroom window, and the first time I carved a spoon in our kitchen! Places shape people, and I'm grateful to have been shaped by this little house in Liverpool. ❤️

Playing around with a new form after a request from a friend. Their baby boy recently started eating solids and they were tired of all the plastic spoon options. I made this one quite a bit more robust than I normally do, hopefully it will stand up to a teething child!

This is me signing off for the year. Hope you all enjoy time with friends and family this holiday season. 👋❣️

I tried to squeeze one more shipment out before the holidays, fingers crossed it gets there in time 🤞. This was for a customer who wanted a scoop similar to those made by .

I have to say I was blown away by this grain when I tucked into this blank. Love the regularity of the medullary rings mixed with the randomness of the spalt. Chaotic beauty, a bit like life I'd say!

Just cracked this beech open after nurturing it for a year and a half in my back garden. Looks like it might make some good looking treen!

Those black lines are the boundaries between two competing fungal colonies that have slowly been growing in the wood. Completely safe and completely groovy!

Scoop blanks are always easier to make back to back. The extra length keeps your fingers a bit further away from the axe, which is always a good thing!

Hi everyone! Took some time over the weekend to enjoy some sunny weather in my garden axing out some blanks to carve for the week. Those ebonised scoops from the previous post got snatched up quick so I'm replenishing the shop.

For those that have followed recently, I'm Eddie and I carve all the things here at Sap is Rising 👋. Thanks for joining me! In the last year and a half or so, things have slowed down on the carving front. I've been spending more time with my family since my daughter was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer and had her leg amputated earlier this year. Quite a difficult time for me and the rest of my family, and definitely put some things into perspective. As the weight of such heavy emotions has settled in me, my sense of self has evolved quickly. I've found it challenging to square who I used to be with who I am now - doing the things I used to do that formed part of my identity almost feels deceptive. Trying to rediscover joy in what motivated me before. Anyway, I'm on a bit of a journey but I think I'm finding my way, at least I'm trying.

Some scoops for your kitchen, available ebonised or not. What's your fav?
