ICF Wall Type Detail

This drawing illustrates an ICF wall construction detail.

ICF (Insulated Concrete Formwork) is assembled using interlocking blocks, similar to a Lego system, before being filled with reinforced concrete to create a highly insulated and airtight structure.

Behind every high-performance home is a detail that does the heavy lifting.

This sketch explores a Passivhaus ICF wall–roof junction, where insulation, airtightness, and structure all have to work perfectly together.

Why ICF (Insulated Concrete Formwork) works so well in this context:
• Excellent thermal performance with continuous insulation
• High airtightness potential (fewer junctions and gaps)
• Structural strength and durability from reinforced concrete
• Thermal mass, helping to stabilise internal temperatures
• Speed and consistency on site, reducing build risk

Ewe Farm

A sensitive and characterful renovation of a Grade II listed barn, carefully designed to retain and celebrate the building’s existing openings while maximising the spectacular views across the surrounding landscape.

Our clients were looking to downsize from their family home and create a space better suited to their lifestyle as they grow older. The barn offered the perfect opportunity, transforming an existing agricultural building into a thoughtful one-bedroom dwelling that embraces its elevated setting and connection to the countryside.

As this project progresses through the planning stage, we’re excited to see the vision for Ewe Farm begin to take shape and look forward to bringing this thoughtful renovation to life.

Detailed Run-Through of the Courtyard

This detailed overview of the courtyard illustrates the construction of the connecting link between the two existing piggeries. The detail highlights the standing seam roof installed over a timber frame with a membrane layer, and also includes sections showing the integration of roof lights and windows.

The Roost - Wall Build UP - SIPS construction

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) deliver faster build times, superior energy efficiency, and exceptional structural performance, making them a smart choice for modern architecture projects. This is why we use SIPs so often in our work.

Here’s a montage from our trip to Keepers Cottage a few weeks ago, showcasing the latest stage of construction. The existing cottage was in the process of having the Gypliner system installed, while slate roofing works were underway on both the original cottage and the new build.

The brickwork was also coming together beautifully, and both the MVHR system and plumbing installations were beginning to take shape.

Stay tuned for more updates, we’ll continue sharing on-site footage as the project progresses.

Self-build or renovation?

It’s one of the first, and most important, decisions you’ll make when creating your home.

But here’s the reality:
There’s no universal “better” option.

We’ve seen:
- Renovations outperform expectations with the right strategy
- Self-builds unlock far greater long term value
- And projects go wrong when the decision is made too early, or on assumptions

The difference always comes down to:
- The site
- The budget
- The brief
- And how well the project is designed from the start

In this blog, we break down both routes clearly, covering cost, risk, performance, and long-term value, so you can make a confident, informed decision.
