Wow what a difference.
I've cleaned the brickwork down with water and a brush, wire wheeled the brick joints and cleaned the stone lintel.
Sadly the lintel has had lots of paint applied over the years to the bottom section, lots of sanding as the wire wheel just melts the oil based paint and moves it about. It's coming on slowly. Small amount of pointing, small amount of plastering and lots of sanding still to do.
But it looks better than covering it all up in plaster again.

Why? why would you cover up the original stone fireplace lintel, then stick! a fake hardwood 30mm thick mantle over the top???.
On this job, I was asked to look at this fireplace as the plaster sounded hollow and had cracked here and there.
Yes, found out just now why. It's hollow because someone has put thistle bonding coat over the top of the original 100-150 year old plaster and not even taken the wallpaper off first or even applied PVA first, hence it cracking and sounding hollow. Hollow because of the original plaster has had it, and the cracking because the bonding hasn't stuck to the wallpaper.
Some people have the strangest of ideas.
It would be a shame to cover it up again. 🤔
