I know I wanted to create a garden that's a haven for wildlife, but I never thought I'd have deer in the garden nibbling my beans! You can easily work out how tall they were by how far up they were able to munch. The poor creatures were obviously suffering in the recent heatwave.

Now is the perfect time to put out nest boxes and clean out the ones from last year. Here's a couple of open fronted boxes I made, suitable for robins or wrens. They need to be kept well hidden and at least 1m off the ground. Ivy is a perfect place for them!

What to get a gardener as a present? How about some willow to create a living sculpture which will grow stronger and more substantial over time. I even had an apprentice for some of the initial construction.
