Shin splints…ouch!!! But can you avoid them?
🏃🏻♀️ It’s not just running that can cause the dreaded shin splints…do you feel that dull ache or throb in your shins after running or even going for a walk? This could be a sign that you suffer from shin splints.
🦵🏻Shin splints clinically known as ‘medial tibial stress syndrome’ (MTSS) is often caused by exercise, it is an overuse injury when repeating the same movement. This is why it is most common in runners…especially if your new to running or have increased your millage too quickly.
😖 The pain is located along the shin bone…the tibia, this is the large bone that you can feel at the front of your lower leg. When the muscles & tendons are overworked they become tender to touch, feel painful when walking/exercising but the pain may decrease whilst moving. However if left untreated or you continue to overwork the muscles this could potentially end up as a stress reaction or stress fracture!
⁉️ But are they unavoidable? Maybe, at times not completely unavoidable but certainly manageable if you do suffer!
👟 Firstly look at your footwear, choose the right ones for the job & change them regularly especially if your using them for sports such as running (an average for a runner is every 300-500 miles). Don’t over do it…over training is one of the main causes of shin splints…going too hard too quickly! Start new activities slowly & consider cross-training to lesser the impact. Add strength training to your routine, this is so underestimated in keeping yourself pain & injury free!
💆🏻♀️ Lastly…but certainly shouldn’t be the last on your list is to get regular sports massage, it plays a huge part in keeping you on the go & injury free! Your far better to use massage as a maintenance to your movement health than let yourself suffer injury first. If I’ve got your attention this far & your thinking of having a massage…feel free to send me a message to see how I can help 💙
