The redevelopment of Royal Opera House in Covent Garden required a careful balance between contemporary intervention and the preservation of a globally recognised cultural landmark.

As part of the “Open Up” redevelopment designed with Stanton Williams, the upper-floor restaurant and bar were extensively renovated, incorporating a series of bespoke glazing interventions by IQ Projects to improve circulation, flexibility and public engagement within the building.

Glazing was introduced to protect external dining spaces while maintaining views across the courtyard below. Bespoke sliding glass partitions were designed to remain visually minimal, preserving the historic architecture and spatial experience.

A defining feature of the project is a series of structural glass oriel windows projecting from the restaurant into the balcony space. These inhabitable glazed volumes create unique seating areas, enhancing the connection to the surrounding architecture while maintaining the transparency of the envelope.

As the London Festival of Architecture begins this month, it offers a moment to reflect on how architecture shapes “belonging” through connection, access and shared experience across the city.

Across cultural and community-led projects, IQ Projects has delivered bespoke architectural glazing solutions designed to balance openness, daylight and accessibility with the sensitivities of existing buildings and public spaces.

At Lea Bridge Library in East London, glazing forms part of the transformation of a Grade II listed building into a renewed civic space. Working with Studio Weave, a new timber-framed extension introduces a café and flexible community areas, with a full-height glazed façade connecting interior spaces to the surrounding landscape and mature trees.

At The Pitt Building, a landmark historic venue, frameless glass draft lobbies create a welcoming and accessible point of arrival, improving comfort and circulation while maintaining the openness of the existing architecture. Designed with Allies and Morrison.

Thoughtful architectural interventions can help shape spaces that feel more welcoming, open and connected to the people who use them.

Overlooking the coast, Fowey Hall Hotel has been thoughtfully renewed as a contemporary seaside retreat.

IQ Projects delivered bespoke glazing for a wider renovation to the main house, courtyard, and spa, bringing more natural light into the home while enhancing connections to the interior spaces and surrounding landscape.

Working alongside Blake and Blake Architects, IQ Projects designed, manufactured, and installed a range of glazing systems throughout the hotel.

Minimal windows® sliding doors, alongside casement doors and windows, were specified with a specialist marine-grade finish suited to the exposed coastal conditions. Installed in bi-parting and multi-track configurations, the slim sliding systems allow guest spaces to open directly onto terraces and gardens.

Marine-grade coatings were essential for this coastal site, ensuring long-term durability and resistance to corrosion from salt-laden air.

Savile Row is one of London’s most exacting commercial contexts, where contemporary intervention demands precision, discretion, and exceptional attention to detail.

Working with Piercy & Company, IQ Projects delivered bespoke glazing across this Mayfair redevelopment, which also serves as the head office for Derwent London. The scheme ranges from minimal façades and rooftop extensions to steel-framed Mondrian® systems.

We introduced a rooftop glass box featuring minimal windows® pocket doors, structural glazing, and roof lights. The doors slide into concealed pockets to create a seamless indoor–outdoor connection, while 21mm sightlines and flush thresholds maintain clarity and uninterrupted views across London.

Building 23 introduced bespoke glass pods rising to a structural glass roof, using curved and flat glazing to define spaces while maintaining light and openness; qualities that are difficult to achieve within dense central London buildings.

Across all stages of the Savile Row development, IQ Projects designed, supplied, and installed the architectural glazing to ensure each intervention supported the wider architectural vision.

Clerkenwell Design Week offers a moment to reflect on the area’s long‑standing role in commercial architecture, material innovation and design‑led refurbishment.

Across Clerkenwell and the surrounding central London fringe, refurbishment projects demand glazing that responds sensitively to existing fabric, dense urban conditions and planning constraints, while still introducing openness, daylight and usability.

At St John Street in Clerkenwell, IQ Projects delivered recessed structural glazing set between Portland stone columns, redefining the ground‑floor façade as part of an Art‑Deco‑influenced refurbishment. The result is a contemporary intervention that balances transparency, proportion and long‑term performance within an urban context.

Elsewhere in the area, projects such as Wolverine HQ show how internal glazing screens can shape contemporary workplaces, supporting visual connection and flexibility within existing buildings. On sites including Pentonville Road and Ropemaker Street, specialist structural and fire‑rated glazing has been coordinated to meet regulatory demands without compromising architectural clarity.

In each of these schemes, IQ Projects designed and installed the architectural glazing, working closely with architects and contractors to ensure glazing supports the wider design intent.

As Clerkenwell Design Week returns, it highlights the continued role of carefully considered refurbishment in shaping sustainable commercial architecture across central London.

Before and after: restoring the Old Reading Room in Brighton.

Once a dilapidated Victorian reading room, this listed building was carefully restored and re‑imagined as a café while retaining the character and craftsmanship of the original structure.

Working within the constraints of the historic stonework, IQ Projects designed, supplied and installed the architectural glazing that sits discreetly behind the retained facade. The glazing includes slim sliding doors, structural glass elements and casement windows, all detailed to support the new use without competing with the historic fabric.

IQ Projects regularly works on unique and complex heritage projects where sensitive intervention, technical understanding and close coordination are essential.

With the return of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, there is renewed focus on horticulture and its role in our cultural history. The Story of Gardening Museum at The Newt in Somerset was conceived as a permanent architectural celebration of that history, rather than as a garden or landscape project.

IQ Projects was appointed as part of the original build team to design, supply and install the architectural glazing for the museum. The glazing was integral to the building’s architectural intent, bringing daylight into the internal spaces, maintaining openness and clarity, and supporting a calm, public environment for learning and exhibition.

Structural and frameless glass solutions were developed to sit comfortably within the overall architectural language of the building, allowing the story being told inside to remain central while meeting the functional and performance demands of a public cultural space.

Projects like this underline the role architectural glazing can play in shaping meaningful cultural buildings, not as a feature in its own right, but as a carefully considered part of the architecture from day one.

It’s time to rethink what we mean when we say “glass façade”.
A glass façade does not have to be flat, repetitive or standardised.

With the right approach, it can be shaped, scaled and detailed to suit the architecture, the structure and the context it responds to.

At IQ Projects, we design and deliver glass façades that vary in form, geometry and performance, from sculptural and curved structures to framed and frameless systems, all developed around the intent of the building rather than a fixed typology.

Our latest guide explores how contemporary glass façades can be conceived and engineered beyond conventional expectations.

This project brings together what we do best: design, engineering and precise installation at scale.

At our global headquarters and glazing design studio in Buckinghamshire, IQ designed and installed a 6‑metre‑tall structural glass façade, forming a transparent front elevation that reflects our approach to architectural glazing in practice.

The installation involved lifting and positioning large, heavy glass units with exacting tolerances, requiring detailed coordination between design, engineering and site teams. Every stage — from glass specification through to sequencing and final placement — was developed to ensure clarity, accuracy and long‑term performance.

The completed façade delivers a light‑filled workspace and a clear expression of what is possible when specialist glazing is designed and installed as a fully integrated process.

This pavilion is a reminder that good glazing design often lies in knowing when not to be seen.

The café pavilion was conceived around a sculptural metal shell, designed by Mark Wray Architects and informed by concept drawings from metal sculptor Matthew Sanderson. The architectural ambition was clear from the outset: the metal structure should remain the dominant visual and spatial element.

Frameless structural glass was specified to form the external walls of the café so that the enclosure could effectively disappear behind the sculptural form. By eliminating visible frames and interruptions, the glazing allows the metal shell to take centre stage, maintaining clarity of intent and avoiding competition between materials.

IQ Projects engineered, supplied and installed the specialist frameless glazing, delivering an enclosure that meets the practical requirements of a public café — weather‑tightness, durability and year‑round performance — while remaining visually recessive. The glazing does not seek attention, yet without it, the architectural idea could not function.

The result is a pavilion where structure, sculpture and engineering are precisely aligned — glass used not as an object of focus, but as the quiet enabler of design.
