The Pedro Youth Club Summer Show is always a special event in the calendar for the local Hackney Community - but this weekend had greater significance being the first anniversary of the passing of its inspirational leader and ambassador James Cook MBE. A fitting tribute for James was the attendance of over 20 ex-World, European, Commonwealth and British Boxing Champions and the parading of a memorial artwork (seen here in the ring with Pedro YC Chair Derek Williams).
It was also attended by newly elected Hackney Mayor Zoe Garbett who spoke of Pedro's Community importance from the ring. So Pedro's Trustees are looking forward to working closely with her to continue and progress the essential engagement programs and facility improvements - particularly in the run-up to Pedro's 100year Centenary in 2029.

Capital Investment in Visitor Attractions (whether for expansion, refurbishment or start-ups) generally requires permission and/or compliance (Planning, Building Regulations, CDM/Health +Safety, BNG, Equality Act, etc.).

Although, generically referred to as Economic Development, this term can often semantically minimise the symbiotic and positively beneficial impacts in Social, Environmental and Political outcomes.

The shift from The Experience Economy (economic performance) towards The Transformation Economy (achieve aspirations) balances the traditional dichotomy between the Pragmatic and Emotional (Need v Want) motives that inform any Strategic Project Brief and ultimately decision making.

As architects, the initiating expression in the guiding process outlined in the RIBA Plan of Work, is defined as the Client's "Statement of Need".

However, RHA has been adopting a preferred term - Client's "Statement of Aspiration" - thereby providing (re)assurance that any Permission or Compliance delivers on the Aspiration and not limited by expediency or eroded through external factors ..... in effect, acting as a project's "compass".

This therefore also suggests a shift in role towards that of "guide".... in addition to architect’s professional, moral and legal responsibilities.

So once again, Joe Pine (The Transformation Economy) has eloquently articulated what we have been processing intuitively..... both in diagnostic and/prescriptive purpose.

RHA look forward to developing and delivering our Client's, Industry and Societal Aspirations into the future.....

In 1999 the publication of The Experience Economy (Pine and Gilmore) heralded the emergence of an "insightful, highly original and yet eminently practical approach" for businesses to enhance economic performance by staging memorable Experiences.

That first edition included trail-blazing projects - like Volkswagen's Autostadt (opened 2000) that ray hole architects (RHA) created alongside the VW team.

What we had been imagining, designing and implementing intuitively as Strategists, Masterplanners and Architects, was given an essential framework to articulate both diagnosis of operating visitor attractions and importantly the ability to prescribe strategic briefs for new projects, expansion plans, refurbishments and start-up attractions.

Subsequently, RHA has adopted these principles for over 25 years creating an array of extraordinary experiential attractions across all sector types, whilst informing countless more strategic masterplans, in addition to facilitating RHA's unique 1-2 day exploration workshops with Client in-house teams.

In the process, RHA needed to interpret these principles into a range of relevant and compliant design processes that assists our Clients and project team members (content creatives and construction) to align with what is still a highly regulated construction industry and legal planning system which greatly influences available funding models - without hindering the quest for creative excellence.

Fast forward to February 2026 and the publication of The Transformation Economy (Pine) that extends the “progression of economic value” by guiding businesses and their visitors towards achieving their aspirations whilst flourishing sustainably.

Once again RHA has translated these expanded principles into further relevant, applicable and compliant strategic briefing and design processes to guide our Clients towards achieving "their aspirations, whether that's increasing prosperity, improving well-being, developing knowledge or finding purpose".....

RHA therefore, continues to redefine its vital role and relevance as Strategic Business and Masterplanning Architects across the Visitor Attraction sector - and when appointed, alongside project partners and Client in-house teams, adopting a highly-effective "Camelot Project Delivery Structure".

This recognition of the shift towards the Transformation Economy is very timely and therefore, RHA are looking forward to (re)engaging with our existing Clients and introducing ourselves to potential Clients to assist in guiding their ambitions.

Kicking off the Museum and Heritage Show 2026 with a keynote centred around Sustainability. This primary position in the program reinforces the shift that sustainability holds in positively continuing its importance and diversity - beyond the original baselines of environmental and economic sustainability..... as the project collaborator generally responsible for the Built Environment, Landscape and Infrastructure - ensuring "comprehensive" inclusion, interaction and coordination of all factors/inputs that contribute to overall sustainability impacts is critical.

Beautiful weather greeted myself and Welsh Water's Visitor Experience Manager (Mike Booth) at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre this weekend - where Ray Hole Architects latest re-development proposals were presented as part of the Public Engagement Day. The refurbished and extended Visitor Centre and Masterplan will perform the role of a "clasp for the string of pearls experiences" spread across the extensive estate - including a series of iconic reservoir dams that supply Birmingham and other cities in addition to hydro-electric generation. The original 1900's engineering Workshop will act as the new Entrance Hall welcoming visitors and leading them into the proposed Panorama Cafe (with views across the river towards the Celtic Rainforest and Dam) or the Planetarium which complements the Dark Skies status of the site and Interpretive AV/graphic exhibitory throughout the Centre and within the external landscape, telling the story of this extraordinary environment and engineering endeavour.

Ray Hole Architects wish Sir David Attenborough a very special 100th Birthday. The world has changed so much over this century - but your inspiring style and wisdom has remained consistent. As architects very active in the conservation community, your support for important projects has been invaluable - especially when we were designing the Land of the Lions at ZSL London Zoo. A special memento I treasure is a "hand-written" letter from you (a rarity in these digital days) - Thank You Sir David

The Museum and Heritage Community gather next week to explore Strategic Aspirations, Visionary Masterplans and Deliverable Economic Development.

Therefore, I am really looking forward to catching up with Friends, Trusted Collaborators and the many Clients - old and new - that will be attending.

So, let's grab the chance to chat and discuss how RHA can assist in realising your aspirations.....

See you there!

It was so nice to catch up again with Terry Stevens at the WXO LExW this week where he was taking part in the program. Possibly the leading commentator on Tourism, his latest book The Spark and a Sense of Wonder (for the curious, the wanderers and the storytellers) encourages us all to be slow.... in order to nourish ourselves.... and is therefore so timely as it perfectly unites the many contributions at WXO (but in particular Pigalle Tavakkoli and Bob Roger's presentations).

So WXO LExW draws to a close - a stellar program packed full of content over 3 days at the Ministry of Sound the Experience Safari across London. A highlight was an inspiring session hosted by Pigalle Tivakkoli (The School of Experience Design) who captured our imaginations with her philosophies 🙏
Already, everyone is talking about next year - which will develop exponentially from 2026....
Thank you James and the WXO Family and of course all the Speakers and the "global' community of attendees.
Safe travels and see you soon at the Campfires 👍👍👍

Day 2 at WXO LExW where the cream of the Experience Economy converged on the Ministry of Sound for the commencement of the Conference Sessions. What a day - showcasing/celebrating our community's extraordinary designers and being inspired by the wisdom of the industry's gurus.
Meeting up with Joe Pine and Bob Rogers is still a privilege (congrats to BRC on winning Experience Team Award). Joe provided the future trajectory compass (Transformation Economy) and Bob reminded us of the "golden thread" of Story that weaves through every aspect of what we imagine, create and operate.
Meeting old friends and developing new friendships has made today wonderful - the rest of the week could be extraordinary.
Well done James and the WXO Team 👏👏👏
