In 1999 the publication of The Experience Economy (Pine and Gilmore) heralded the emergence of an "insightful, highly original and yet eminently practical approach" for businesses to enhance economic performance by staging memorable Experiences.
That first edition included trail-blazing projects - like Volkswagen's Autostadt (opened 2000) that ray hole architects (RHA) created alongside the VW team.
What we had been imagining, designing and implementing intuitively as Strategists, Masterplanners and Architects, was given an essential framework to articulate both diagnosis of operating visitor attractions and importantly the ability to prescribe strategic briefs for new projects, expansion plans, refurbishments and start-up attractions.
Subsequently, RHA has adopted these principles for over 25 years creating an array of extraordinary experiential attractions across all sector types, whilst informing countless more strategic masterplans, in addition to facilitating RHA's unique 1-2 day exploration workshops with Client in-house teams.
In the process, RHA needed to interpret these principles into a range of relevant and compliant design processes that assists our Clients and project team members (content creatives and construction) to align with what is still a highly regulated construction industry and legal planning system which greatly influences available funding models - without hindering the quest for creative excellence.
Fast forward to February 2026 and the publication of The Transformation Economy (Pine) that extends the “progression of economic value” by guiding businesses and their visitors towards achieving their aspirations whilst flourishing sustainably.
Once again RHA has translated these expanded principles into further relevant, applicable and compliant strategic briefing and design processes to guide our Clients towards achieving "their aspirations, whether that's increasing prosperity, improving well-being, developing knowledge or finding purpose".....
RHA therefore, continues to redefine its vital role and relevance as Strategic Business and Masterplanning Architects across the Visitor Attraction sector - and when appointed, alongside project partners and Client in-house teams, adopting a highly-effective "Camelot Project Delivery Structure".
This recognition of the shift towards the Transformation Economy is very timely and therefore, RHA are looking forward to (re)engaging with our existing Clients and introducing ourselves to potential Clients to assist in guiding their ambitions.
