When Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson first came to view Sissinghurst Castle Garden, it was in such a state of disrepair that it looked almost lost to time. But even in the midst of Elizabethan ruins, Vita’s imagination began to spark.

On 6 April 1930, Harold wrote: “We come suddenly upon a nut walk and that settles it…”.

Now bursting with spring colour and Snakeshead Fritillary, it is easy to understand why Vita and Harold fell in love with The Nuttery so deeply and how it helped to inspire their creative vision at Sissinghurst.

This simply means putting potatoes upright with eyes at the top on a cool bright place like a window sill ready to sprout.

Wait until the shoots are about 2.5cm then plant out.

Now is the perfect time to plant autumn bulbs such as daffodils and allium, while the soil is still warm from the summer sun, however leave your tulips until much later in November to avoid the tulip fire virus.

A few little jobs to keep you gardening all year round:

Now is the time to plant out or pot up gladioli before the end of the month for late summer colour in 2 to 3 months time. Use a bulb planter to dig a hole 15cm deep. If you are gardening on heavy clay, add 2cm of sand or horticultural grit to the hole. Place your corm in the hole, fill with soil, then mulch with compost.

Now the light levels are increasing it is a good time to sow aubergines and other half hardy annuals.

Half full a seed tray with peat free compost and scatter the seeds over the top then scatter more compost lightly over the top. Now water with slightly warm water and put in a light place for the seeds to germinate.
