In 1984, patients with a hospital window facing a small group of trees went home a day earlier than those facing a brick wall. 🌳 That study by Roger Ulrich set off four decades of research into how plants affect the way we feel, work and recover.

Our new article gathers the evidence, from the office studies on concentration and productivity 📈 to the two hours a week in nature now used as a public-health rule of thumb, and looks at the plants that bring movement, scent and seasonal change into a planted space. 🐝🌸

Shade is one of the more common conditions in modern landscaping, and one of the trickier to plant well 🌿

North-facing walls, interior courtyards, beds under retained tree canopy.
Our latest planting scheme has been designed for exactly those conditions. Structural evergreens, ferns and Hosta for texture, and a dense groundcover layer including Disporopsis 'Shade Runner' from our forthcoming Climadapt range 🌱

The full scheme, with the 2m × 4m plan and the thirteen species, is on our website.

There's wheat growing in one of our fields at Pigeon House Farm right now 🌾 Not what you'd expect to see at a tree nursery.

Field-grown trees spend years in the same ground, and over time that draws structure and fertility out of the soil. So between tree rotations we sow wheat, and then leave the field fallow for a year, letting the soil recover naturally 🌱

It's straightforward agronomy, the same logic farmers have used for centuries 🌍 Soil health doesn't show up in the finished tree, but it shows up in the next twenty years of growth on that ground 🌳

What's looking good in our nurseries this month 🌿

🌼 Achillea millefolium: native yarrow with flat flower heads loved by hoverflies and bees; drought-tolerant once established
🍊 Choisya ternata 'Aztec Pearl': fine glossy foliage and fragrant white spring flowers; compact evergreen shrub for borders or low hedging
🌸 Cistus × pulverulentus 'Sunset': magenta-pink rock rose for full sun and free-draining ground
🖤 Heuchera 'Timeless Night': near-black foliage with coral-pink flower spikes; lifts shaded planting
💛 Spiraea japonica 'Golden Princess': bright gold foliage and pink summer flowers
💜 Vinca major 'Maculata': variegated evergreen ground cover with periwinkle-blue flowers

Today is World Environment Day 🌍

A useful moment to think about what environmental practice actually looks like at the nursery end of a project.

For us, it shows up in the small, repeated choices that add up across a year of orders. Our G Cycle scheme, where pallets and crates come back to be cleaned and re-used multiple times before they're recycled ♻️

Growing 100% peat-free across the range, and encouraging our suppliers to do the same 🌱 Cutting back on chemical pesticides and fertilisers in favour of organic and biological alternatives that support healthier ecosystems 🌿 The community planting work and the native, nectar-rich stock we build up so pollinators have somewhere to land when a scheme goes in 🐝

None of it is dramatic. Just the daily, operational work that makes the difference 💚

There's a stretch in May and early June where many planting schemes start to lose their footing. The early bulbs and woodland subjects are receding, and the summer display hasn't quite caught up. 🥀

This is where late spring perennials matter most. They hold the sunny borders together, carry the shaded ground after the hellebores have gone over, and extend the season where soil stays moist. None are showy on their own, but together they keep a scheme reading as continuous rather than transitional.

The temptation in design is to plan around peak moments. The harder question, we think, is what the planting is doing in the weeks between them. 🌸

We've written up the perennials we'd recommend for this stretch on the blog, and how to use them across sun, shade and moisture-retentive ground. Full blog on our website https://loom.ly/WBauAPI

Five years of plant donations, and our Greenwood Community scheme is still finding new projects to support.

Since we started, we've donated plants to more than 100 non-profit and community-backed projects across Sussex and beyond. This year alone, we've already made twelve donations to schools and charities, both old and new to the scheme, with more already in the pipeline. 🌱

A new £3m research centre dedicated to plant health and environmental horticulture is on the way, jointly backed by Defra and the RHS 🌿

Plant diseases have already reshaped the UK landscape in recent decades. Ash Dieback alone is changing tree canopies across the country 🌳, with other threats like Xylella and OPM putting pressure on what comes next 🦠 For too long, research in this area has been under-resourced.

For us as a nursery, the centre is a welcome signal. The quiet, day-to-day work of biosecurity, sanitation and plant passports that we do as a Plant Healthy certified business is finally being matched by serious investment in the science behind it 🌱

Healthy plants start long before they get into the ground 💚
