January 2025.
To our dear followers and customers, we are sorry to announce that The Lychgate Cutting Garden is CLOSING DOWN

From its small beginnings seven seasons ago, it has been the most exciting, rewarding, fulfilling, totally engaging and inspiring enterprise we could ever have hoped for. A huge learning curve for us in all areas.

As is normal for us at this time of year, we take the opportunity to re - appraise everything as far as our workload is concerned, as well as look to make improvements and appropriate changes. This Winter season has taken a different turn in this regard, and although our love for the garden is so great, we absolutely recognise we need to put our energies more towards our growing family at the moment and so the garden must close.

Our immense gratitude to dear Matthew Hubbard for making this all possible in the first place and for him having faith in us to create the Cutting Garden in whatever way we saw fit.
A sincere thank you to everyone who has supported the garden throughout, making the past seven years, the joy and success it has been.

We too will miss the flowers and you all hugely.

As dear Ray Hubbard (Hill House) once said, with a twinkle in his eye - ‘As all good things go - it went!’

We must hold onto his wise words and perhaps these of Dr Seuss - ‘Don’t cry because its over, smile because it happened’.

And we’re so glad that it did!

We apologise to those of you with gift vouchers which remain in date for 2025 as this was unforeseen. Please contact Laura [email protected] so that she can arrange a refund with you.

Hill House Nursery remains open as usual 11am-5pm everyday.

Very best wishes from us all at Lychgate Xx

This is Anna (on the right!) our good friend and volunteer. It has been lovely having her help in the garden, we’ve enjoyed her company and her gardening skills over the past two seasons and admired her patience unwinding bindweed and sifting out ground elder on the plot!!
Thank you dear Anna for all your hard work ❤️ xx

This is Jeremy.
He is chief planter and is a bank of organic gardening knowledge! He planted most of the 6,000 seedlings we grew this season. He comes for about six or eight weeks, once a week in spring and does a Mary Poppins on the place! We’re not quite sure how we managed to get them all in the ground without him before!
Thank you for all your help Jeremy. Hugely appreciated ❤️

This is Chrissie. One of our good friends and a brilliant helper.
Hard working with a heart of gold! Chrissie makes a lot of our bunches for us and gets stuck in with the hard graft in the garden.
Thank you for all that you do Chrissie ❤️

The Mothership. Mya. Nanny M.
My right hand woman. 2nd in command. The one who reminds me to stop worrying.
Helps me to brainstorm on a regular basis, about signage, prices, how to remind customers we’re here each summer, what size bunches should be, whether or not we should wood chip the paths this season etc etc.
Promoted from helper in the garden to chief Nanny since Fig came along last summer, Mum now helps with Fig and then makes bunches and does whatever she can when Fig has a snooze or some Mummy time!
Mostly, she is just there.
For whatever is needed, she is willing.
A cheerful face for all who visit.
And good at reminding me to be proud when I’m feeling despondent!
She is amazing! Thanks Mum x
❤️

Hello.
My name is Laura.
I have worked for Matthew at the beautiful Hill House Nursery for over twelve years. Seven years ago, I asked Matthew if I could set up a Pick Your Own Flower Garden next to the Nursery and he not only obliged, but encouraged and helped me to do so.

So, while continuing to work three days a week in the Nursery, I manically planted plants and sowed seeds and dove into a new world!
My Mum, Mya (The Mothership) began helping in whichever ways she could (which are many) and so sprung The Lychgate Cutting Garden.

It has evolved over the years, as many of you have witnessed and so kindly supported and enjoyed.

We love it.
It is good, sometimes hard, work, which at times is overwhelmingly rewarding.

Now bringing a 3rd generation, our one year old little girl Fig, to the patch most days and wondering how on earth we’re going to get enough work done! And yet this season seems to be more floriferous than ever!

Thank you to all of our lovely, lovely customers. We could not do it without you ❤️

Laura x
